Fascinating insight into corp. governance and big churches

I well remember when PtL was brought to shame, so if you ever wanted to know the story behind that this is a great book. More importantly, it's a fascinating insight into failures of corporate governance and the consequent service failures and collapse of public trust.
With chapters entitled "Where were the non-executives?" and "Where were the auditors?", it provides neat foreshadowing to well publicized private sector failures to come. While governance conditions in the PtL were extreme, I believe that many of the warning signs shown in this book are relevant to the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.
Not only that, but I found this book really easy to read, gripping even.

WERNER STUMM is an internationally renowned aquatic scientist at the Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology, EAWAG, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH. JAMES J. MORGAN is Marvin L. Goldberger Professor of Environmental Engineering Science at the California Institute of Technology. Reference Yes, Teaching Text, No

This book is an excellent reference text for people who already know something about aquatic chemistry. It contains more material and covers more topics than any other book in the field. As a teaching text, however, it is severely lacking.
The first problem is the often convoluted writing, which lapses at times into incomprehensibility; read this book for 5 minutes and you will find at least one confusing sentence or circular explanation. The second problem is the lack of clarity about how to actually solve equlibrium problems: there are lots of examples of tableaus used to solve problems, but the explanation of how the tableau is constructed is not good, and neither is the description of how to obtain the proton condition or what it is (and it is crucial to understand this). Finally, many so-called "examples" do very little to help clarify things. Readers who find the tableau method confusing as introduced by Stumm and Morgan will find themselves consulting the aquatic chemistry text by Morel (or the later edition by Hering and Morel) to learn how to actually use the method. When they do, they will probably find that text highly preferable: clearly written, with all the examples worked out from start to finish.
These problems really make learning from this text a monumental struggle for students not already versed in the subject. However, as previously noted, as a reference for professionals, it is unequaled.

Stumm and Morgan remains the best aquatic chemical book ever written.
It is fundamental in its approach to the processes that control the composition of natural waters, it is a pleasure to read and should be a must for any student and/or professional in the field.
After more than 20 years working in the field I still find it useful and up to date in many respects.
A pitty that there is no Spanish version of it, thousands of Spanish speaking chemists and geochemists are missing a classic.

This book is an excellent reference. It presents a thorough discussion of a complex topic. The authors provide many worked examples, with all required numeric inputs and resutls, that permit the reader to quickly verify his or her understanding of the material. The consistent and proper use of units throughout the book is refreshing.

Best handbook on grieving I've read... & I've read alot

Most of the books I've read on grieving were personal accounts which are somewhat helpful, however this book actually helps you handle your grief and dealing with living again which I'd been having a problem with since the death of my husband years ago. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who has lost a loved one to death and wants to understand what is happening to them. This book makes grief make sense. And is written in an extremely understandable and readable style. The only problem I had getting through this book was I had to keep putting it down because I was crying. The book lives up to its title.

Talks about the real suffering after the death of loved one

This was the first book I ever read that discussed the aspect of grief that caused me the most trouble. Although I looked like the same person on the outside, after experiencing the deaths of my brother and mother, inside I was NOT the same & had a very difficult time tying to step back into my life and this book is one of the few that deals with that. I have bought copies for friends coping with loss and grief and they have benefitted from it as well. If you or someone you know is dealing with the death of someone, do yourselves a favor & buy this book!

I was stuck in one phase!

I am so thankful for finding this book and reading the reviews about it. There are many books about grief, but this got me through the phase I was stuck in. I had lost a husband, mother and sister in a short time, and kept telling people I had an "insecure" feeling that I couldn't shake. Your friends don't know how to lead you out of your misery, but this author does. She has been through more than I have and pointed out to me what a frightening place the world can be when your whole life has been turned upside down. I thought I should be able to handle anything and had gone through all the phases but she pointed out how I needed to go back and really "grieve". I did and feel so much stronger now! I recommend this book for everyone who really wants to get on with the rest of your life and not be stuck like I was.

Often you might find books reviewed most favorably by
leading academic researchers to fall far short of the praise constituting a legal liability for the author's employer and
inducing a suspicion that the reviewer had material interests at stake.

This allows an elegant and fluent style of writing.
Descriptions that are detailed enough to translate into code immediately almost certainly lack aesthetic qualities and one usually does not read them again them once the relevant information has been extracted. This is not the case here. I find myself browsing the material again after some algorithm has already been implemented and enjoying the experience.
The author has the ability to articulate complicated concepts clearly and without resort to heavy notation.
2. Mathematical rigour.
The mathematics is impeccable. In my own experience this can be said of fewer than 10% of the books in the field of finance.
The prerequisites are minimal. You have to know the most basic properties of Brownian motion (barely more than the definition)
and be familiar with the notion of a probability density.
Nonetheless several highly interesting subjects are treated in much detail (for example effective dimensionality reduction in conjunction with the application of low discrepancy sequences).
3. Choice of subject.
The techniques discussed are those used by leading investment banks. This is unsurprising since the author himself works at such an institution. The book is quite different from one devoted to Monte Carlo methods in physics, genetics or polymer science.
4. Physical appearance.
Page size, page layout, font selection and binding are all of high quality. The book has a wealth of diagrams communicating interesting information.

CD does not work

It is a book for mathematics lovers not financial oriented profesionals. I would not recomend this book for those looking to gain more practical knowledge on this subject.

I can NOT follow the math and NO CODE!

You better already know the basics of Monte Carlo Simulation
to get anything out of the book.
I STRONGLY disagree with one reviewer who thinks
all one needs to know is :
1) The definition of Brownian Motion and
2) What a Probability distribution is.
FAT chance.
The book requires knowing Linear Algebra, Probability,
PDEs, Stochastic Modelling, and SDEs to be of any use.
Where's the CODE, baby!
There are very few examples put into code!
One reviewer on Amazon.com, says the book is so
detailed you don't need code. Funny, I have never
seen anything "so detailed" that an example (code)
would make the explanation less clear!

Not For the Innumerate

I would have given this book 5 stars if it was written with more examples to demonstrate the theories and formulas that it contains. The author certainly doesn't "spoon feed" his material to the reader. If you are innumerate stay away from this book. Of course, if you are innumerate stay out of trading the markets. What the author has to say regarding the correct amount of contracts or shares to buy based upon the calculation of optimal f is very important in order to keep from going broke and to receive expotential gains. It is loaded with concepts to facilitate the money mangament element of trading. I would say that a good prerequisite for reading this book would be an engineering degree something like advanced rocket science.

Optimal f will make your trading go belly up

Optimal F is Ralph Vince's baby but it doesn't take into consideration that there is a trade out there that will take you out of the market. I trade professionally and would never trade anywhere near with the risk he talks about. The best traders I know are always prepared for the worst case secenario and just want to keep playing the game. Optimal F will take you out of the market very quickly.

Most Comprehensive Analysis of Money Managament I Have Encountered

Set aside all your pre-concieved notions of money management being about risk/reward. Whilst it is definately a good idea to keep r&r in mind, it's not very mathematically defined. Everything Ralph Vince presents in this book is applicable to trading at an optimal level (for maximum gains).

He begins the book by reviewing the concept presented in his previous book on empiral optimal f. This serves as a primer to the coming chapter where the idea of parametric optimal f is detailed, allowing any trader (even without empiral data) to determine his/her optimal quantity to trade. Vince makes a clear distinction between the classical portfolio theory of defining optimal weights, with the notion in mind that optimal quantity and optimal weights are different for leveraged accounts. Following on from parametric optimal f, we are introduced to the 'optimal of the optimal' theory where he combines optimal f with modern portfolio theory (markowitz e-v theory) to obtain a construction for an unconstrained geomtrically optimal portfolio. Vince discusses the Black-Scholes Options Pricing Mode, and the Black Futures Option Pricing Model, among other things to incorporate into his framework for this 'optimal of the optimal' portfolio.

This is definately not a book that can be read in a few days, unlike the majority of books I've encountered on trading. It would serve the reader best if he/she were to summarise the ideas Vince presents, along with following what he is doing by creating their own statistical representations (in Excel, Minitab,... though this did pose a problem because some ideas are very challenging to formulate into a statistical package). Finally I thought that I should point this out - I am quite confident in the fact that Vince makes a mistake with one of his partial derivatives in the introductory chapter on E-V Theory (when employing the Lagrange method).
