Down to earth, practical guide on forecasting.

The book provides coverage of three important areas:
- Basic forecasting tools and methods - summarizing data, statistical tools, regression, as well as some material on more advanced forecasting methods
- Data preparation - time series decomposition, smoothing methods
- A discussion of the issues involved in forecasting - long term versus short term forecasting, accuracy of forecasts, the importance and limitations of judgmental forecasts and combining these with statistical forecasts
I was fortunate enough to stumble across this book in a colleagues office and believe this book should belong in every market research professional's shelf.

Excellent book written with the practitioner in mind. Mathematical formalism kept to a minimum. The last 4 chapters (about judgmental forecasting and practical aspects of forecasting) are a plus vs. other books.

Could be better

There are few "beyond the general biochem" textbooks that deal specifically with protein chemistry. This is probably the best of them although it could be better. Additionally, with all of the advances in protein science, it is a dated book with a publication date of 2005. There are many topics that really need to be included in a book of this nature, many of which have only been developed to the point of textbook inclusion in the past decade.

This first edition has a lot of typographical errors. Nevertheless, I was in communication with the author, emailing him the corrections, and he was clearly very eager & aggressive about making sure those errors will be corrected in subsequent printings.

An accessable introduction to a vast field of inquiry

An "Introduction" to anything is going to alienate half the readers. Why? Well, of necessity it is going to compress large topics, simply summarize complex topics, and leave whole swaths of material untouched. Most complaint reviews here fall roughly in to one or more of those buckets.

Let' face some facts: finance is a huge field of inquiry; mathematics is a huge field of inquiry; practical execution is a huge topic in itself (see the offerings of excellent books on Excel (Walkenbach, Benninga) and C++ (Joshi) and VBA (pick one)). An introduction of the intersections of these topics is no small area of inquiry. I stress using AMAZON's "look inside" feature for a table of contents rather than repeat the litany of topics, but major issues like risk, random, returns, and standard methods are all covered in a fine first approximation.

So how well does Paul Wilmott do? The answer is not bad. This is a great first book to use with folks crossing over to quantitative finance from other areas (Theology in my case), or for folks who will work and talk with quants but not be one themselves. It will probably appear frustratingly simple to math or engineering majors, but this is an *introduction* and believe me, the heavy lifting comes latter.

As a teaching text, the lack of exercises is a frustrating, but the CDROM has lots of fun spreadsheets with simple built in macros that make practical lecturing a breeze.

Wilmott's style is light, and he does make some logical leaps that can look sloppy but are transparently obvious to folks like him (trained in math), but it is often difficult to know what others don't know and explain without over explaining. Any author has to pick where to compress explanations and no one is going to be completely pleased with all of where Wilmott squeezes. Still, with a minimum bit of extra effort (you are sitting at a computer reading this, and Google Scholar is about two clicks away) anything that isn't clear can be found in an expanded technical address at Wolfram or other helpful sites.

This book is also a great filter. My students who complain it is too easy I move quickly along. Those who still don't get it I steer towards careers in financial sales, those that are lulled into a false sense of power I hand them Shreve to invoke humble silence.

In short, this is an admirable work for its purpose: an *introduction* to a vast, complex, and growing field. The perfect book to discover the field while drinking a beer. Just don't let the beer talk you into thinking you've mastered the subject with this book alone, and you'll be fine.

Excellent as in an introduction to the technical analysis

This book is an excellent starting point for those with no training in the technical aspect of the equities market, although the prime focus is on Derivatives.
Although Derivatives are, as of late, a maligned form of investment, this book delineates a common-sensical approach to evaluating them.
There is a gentle and concise introduction to the mathematics of investments which will please many, but no doubt upset the few purists, especially those who love mathematical rigour and others who would like to retain the mystery and mastery of their universe.
This is an introduction. For those who feel the need to delve deeper, Paul Wilmott has written other books which go into greater depth.

Author leaves gaps in his mathematical derivations

I have been reading this book to try to get a better understanding of Hull's book on Options. Wilmott says he is going to keep the math simple but he often leaves out steps in his reasoning. It may be obvious to him but frequently it has not been obvious to me. In fact, I find Hull's book actually more explanatory and easy to follow on topics like stochastic processes and the creation of Ito's lemma than Wilmott's. This is disappointing as Hull gets pretty detailed in his explanations and could use more examples ( not uncommon for academics). I am not an Einstein so I will and do take out pencil and paper to derive results to make sure I understand. I have not been successful in several instances with this book.

Dated but very good

This is a good introductory book for those that need to develop and promote successful seminars and workshops. The book covers what one needs to know about developing a program, market testing, setting the right fees, marketing, promotion, advertising and publicity. The reader is provided with useful practical tips and advice that I have used to good effect.

The book is well written in simple English that is easy to follow and understand. Despite the book being a bit dated, the advice it provides is still relevant and very useful and practical. Even the veteran has something to learn from this excellent book.

Those who wish to capitalize on the growing business of seminars, workshops, conferences and training classes are recommended to read this book for guidance and directions.

Very dated

While this book gives a good starting point for a seminar newbie, it is quite hampered by its dated material. All statistics and pricing examples are from the late 1980's. There is no recognition anywhere in the book that the Internet exists, PowerPoint can be used in presentations, etc. For instance, you are warned against using carbon copy paper. Hello? Good in 1990, but needs a serious and thorough updating to reflect current trends and technologies.

Like hiring an expert advisory

After reading this book, I feel like I've hired a professional advisor to coach me through starting a training practice. The book covers all the bases: how to choose a topic, how to promote your workshop, how to price it, details about booking facilities, the importance of the back-of-the-room selling, and other topics. The chapters have an authentic feel, coming from someone who has learned from his own mistakes and the mistakes of others, and gives practical and useful tips.

The chapters on testing different mailing lists, prices, days of the week, headlines, brochure sizes is very good. The author refers to dozens of research studies, illustrating how different lists can lead to drastically different profitability. His numbers sense is very good, showing how to calculate break-even attendance, how to decide how much money to risk on initial marketing, how lower attendance can be more profitable than high attendance.

The chapter on making money from selling videotapes, audiotapes and consulting services is also very good, where the author shows several examples of how speakers increased their profits 30% or more by selling additional products at the speaking event. Again, the author shows great business sense about how to increase your profits.

My only complaint is the book is 20 years old and I wonder how much is still relevant. For instance, he has case studies of promoting a seminar through the daily newspaper and direct mail but has nothing to say about the internet, which must surely be an important part of marketing seminars in the 21st century. The dollar figures are all from 1990, so when he says you can conduct a market test for under $1,000 it is meaningless. What is that in 2010 dollars? And is the advice even valid today? These clearly outdated examples make me question how much of the rest of the book is also outdated.

Still, when I was finished reading I didn't feel like I'd read a book; I felt, instead, like I had gained experience. And it gave me a strong foundation and a sense of confidence about moving forward.

The First Book a Contractor Should Read

"Your management decisions alone determine whether you will succeed or fail in the construction business." As a general contractor, my attention was caught by this the opening sentence in Thomas C. Schleifer's "Construction Contractor's Survival Guide". After reading the book I ordered a copy for every one of my project managers and other key staff and continued using it for training throughout my construction career. Schleifer was formerly a consultant to the surety industry, where it was his business to understand the causes of contractors' failures, and it is from this perspective that he describes in his book the ten most common causes of contractor failure and how a contractor can avoid them.
