This is an excellent book in advanced C programming methods.

This is an excellent book in advanced C programming techniques. Although it is an advanced text, the author explains each method in detail and strengthens understanding of key elements in C programming. A number of weaknesses prevent this book from rating 5 stars: the last chapter is number 9 (which makes it harder to use in a 16 week semester), the second chapter is really about four chapters (structures, pointers, linked lists, other topics), the chapter length ranges from 4 pages (chap 1) to 82 pages (chap 2), and it hasn't been updated since 1991. This book is relatively easy to read, but sometimes runs into awkward sentences. The awkward sentences can be directly attributed to required nomenclature (returns...returns...returns...) which can leave the reader wondering if returning to that sentence will improve understanding of the concept. The examples and exercises are wonderful. The examples build a base of programs that should be useful to every programmer. The examples also show the differences in methods achieving the same result and explain the reasoning behind methods that are better (fewer clocks, more efficient use of memory, etc.). I really enjoyed reading this book and wish an updated edition was available, which led me to this website and book review.

This guy is sick

I would reccomend everything this cat writes, but especially this tome. For some scary reason every page of this book address topics that are exactly relevant to my CS coursework in school, and which other books dont address or explain poorly. This guy can make any advanced topic easy.

1. Pointers to pointers, arrays of pointers, pointers to structs, and function pointers are all covered better then anyone.

2. Dude Unix system calls and process control made easy. Great for OS classes.

Even now in 2003 this remains my favorite code book of all time. A great writer.

This is a GREAT book. The book starts off with pointers and arrays none of this "intro to variables" you get in other books. Definately not for beginners but if you know C then this will help you leap to the next level.

About the Author
Daniel Lednicer, PhD, is the author of several books on drug synthesis and discovery. His career in both the private and public sectors has been devoted to the search for new therapeutic agents. Dr. Lednicer spent two decades at the bench as a chemist at the Upjohn Company. Following that, he served as director of chemical research at Mead Johnson, director of pharmaceutical sciences at Adria Laboratories, and pharmaceutical manager at Analytical Biochemistry Laboratories. Most recently, he was a project officer at the National Cancer Institute.

Lester A. Mitscher, Ph.D., recognized for his research achievements by numerous institutions, serves as a consultant for the National Institutes of Health, among other organizations. Other CUPS Projects Astrophysics Simulations Classical Mechanics Simulations Electricity and Magnetism Simulations Modern Physics Simulations Nuclear and Particle Physics Simulations Quantum Mechanics Simulations Thermal and Statistical Physics Simulations Waves and Optics Simulations Solid State Physics Simulations is one volume in a series of nine book/software packages developed by the Consortium for Upper-Level Physics Software. CUPS is an international group of 27 physicists, all with extensive backgrounds in the research, teaching, and development of instructional software. The simulations included in this volume cover: Phonon Dispersion Curves, Density of States, and Specific Heat for 3-D Crystals; Wavefunctions in a Finite 1-D Lattice; Energy Bands, Gaps and Eigenstates in an Infinite 1-D Lattice; Motion of Electron Wave Packet in a 1-D Lattice; Wavefunctions in the LCAO Approximation; and Build your Own Solid State Devices. These simulations include complex, often realistic, calculations of models of various physical systems. If desired, the user may also vary many parameters of the system, and interact with it in other ways, so as to study its behavior in real time. Source code has been provided for users who wish to modify programs. All of the programs are written in Borland/Turbo Pascal for MS-DOS. Minimum hardware requirement is an IBM-compatible 386-level machine with mouse and VGA color monitor. The disk(s) included in this package are 3.5???.

Good book for a self-learner who is not a microbiologist.

The title of this book is the perfect description. It covers "Essential Microbiology". It is not "detailed and complete reference for professionals in the field". It is easy to understand and read and covers what you'd need to know, but not at a level for those who will be making a living at this.

This is an older edition of the book so I doubt it would ever be used in a university class. But these older editions are a great thing for self learners who want to learn a subject outside of their profession. In my case I teach High School science but I'm not a biologist and this book is written at a level where someone like me with graduate level science training in a different field could quickly learn something new. It's actually easy and fun to read, Then if you need more detail on some area buy another book.

this book was exactly what i needed. The bookstore at my school tried selling the hardcopy version for over $300 but by getting the paperback version i saved over $250 on just this textbook alone!! i would recomend to but the paperback copy instead of the hardcopy and DO NOT buy it from your school's bookstore!!!

Hickman's "Mind of A Manager, Soul of A Leader" is 281 pages of lucidly written management insight that goes well beyond the typical dry, anecdotal discourse of the genre. The co-author of "Creating Excellence", Hickman dissects the psychological core of the conflict between the "manager" and "leader" personality types; a conflict he ably shows can be productive if understood and harnessed.
Numerous business scenarios and reality-based interactions are viewed through the perspective of each personality.
One such evaluation is "Conserving Plus Risking" whereby the "manager" conserves assets while the "leader" risks them. The "Plus" refers to the author's ongoing assertion that both can be had by the organization if astute enough to recognize the potential of each. If not, the organization will likely be dominated by one mind-set or the other, losing the value of the missing perspective and valuable resource.
Hickman does well in presenting a balanced view of both perspectives without condescension to either. The value of both to the organization is enhanced by the combination of the two.
The book can be of great benefit to both corporate and entreprenuerial businesses and individuals. The value of the human capital of all businesses is fully realized when the potential of both mentalities is used in concert to accomplish a balanced perspective.

Masterful

Prior reviewers have accurately depicted this work as delineating, in a informative yet entertaining way, the basic differences between management and leadership. As a former Program Manager with degrees in hard science and an MBA, and over 35 years of work experience, I can attest that the working world frequently (in not "almost always") confuses or confounds these two. Furthermore, I believe that different psychological types of folks (a la the Jungian Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) are generally attuned to one, the other, or neither. It is rare to find an individual who can encompass both approaches. Yet, knowing about their differences is the first step towards successfully integrating them. As they say, recognizing the problem is half the solution. I usually give away books after I read them. Not this one. This is a keeper!
