They should never stop publishing this book!!!

This is an excellent book for the first time physics student. It is very "straight to the point" when it comes to explaining physics concepts. This book does not waste time talking about senseless theroy that gets you no where. It tells the concepts of physics clearly and it has EXCELLENT examples to illustrate the concepts that it tries to explain. It has plenty of clear and concise examples. It probably has at least 12 to 15 examples per chapter witch is VERY excellent!!!!
Additionally, this book comes with a GREAT student solutions\help manual. The student solutions\help manual helps explain the concepts even more clearly thus giving you a better understanding of such a difficult subject.
I've seen this book has been around for a long time. I can see why this textbook has been around for a long time because of its superiour quality. I hope this book is still around for students in the future 50 years from now.

Not sure if the positive reviewers actually used this textbook

This is one of the worst textbooks I have ever used. If you're looking for a textbook that gives you a thorough explanation of a concept with multiple, well thought out and dissected examples, this isn't the book for you. Typically, the book will spend about half a page on a concept, include 1 or two poorly explained examples, and move on. This method works fine for the first couple of chapters because most people can reason their way through those problems using their own experiences, but once you move on to more complicated subjects the book really shows just how poor of an instruction method it is. There are end of chapter problems, but none of them are explained and many of them are nothing like the examples shown in the respective chapter. And, to top it off, enough of the solutions in the back of the book are incorrect that after finishing the practice problems you won't know if you've misunderstood the material or the book is just wrong.

Physics can be a tough subject for many students, and given the outdated formatting of this book, the incorrect answers in the back, and the overall poor presentation of material, I will not be using it again for my classes

En excellent book for the science-interested student

This book gives a very thorough explanation of most of the things that surrounds us. It is very easy to understand due to the many examples, and yet manages to maintain very cogent. It does not require much math read this book, since this is explained as the book moves along, and is needed.

Many, many practical problems described and solved in detail concerning packaging, PCB layout, housings, forced and non-forced air cooling. Great diagrams and tables of materials, given in both metric and English. Excellent book for the practical engineer to understand methods to cool PCB components.

Missing a lot for electronic packaging engineers

As a mechanical engineer who designs packaging for electronic equipment (telecommunications systems) I am rather disappointed in this book. There are basically two chapters that are useful while the rest are intended for aerospace applications. Fine, aerospace is a "sexier" application; but with the large number of engineers (ever growing) now looking at trying to keep 15W ASICs cool while avoiding EMC issues and/or manufacturing problems this book misses the boat.
Anyone who has taken the TTI course (Dick Leatherman) or one of the other professional institutes around North America won't get anything from this textbook since it simply captures what's in your notes. For everyone else just wondering about this book - it isn't worth the money.
The negatives: - the units (US imperial) are only useful in the US. The rest of the engineering world intelligently uses SI... - only two sections that are applicable to packaging engineering or other non-aerospace. - outdated technology. - no details on design fundamentals of cooling units (fans, blowers) - only two references to acoustic noise in the entire book! This is inexcusable for electronic equipment! - no discussion of integrating EMC solutions with thermal solutions.
Not recommended unless you like shelfware...

Good reference book for engineers using and designing power electronic equipment

This book covers cooling of electronic equipment in depth. The best feature of the book is the completely worked out examples that Steinberg uses. The reader not only gets the equations, but also sees how they are applied in realistic examples. The only thing that I would have liked to see, but did not, was an example or two dealing more with the cooling of high powered semiconductors (such as the larger IGBTs).

Good diagrams and easy format for the beginner/intermediate

Dinah's book is a great workbook to use in conjunction with learning astronomy from a larger, more complete text. I have often left a larger text to pull out Dinah's as she gets to the point quicker and helps the reader stay focused. Although she walks you through concepts more clearly and concisely than many larger texts, you often find that you want to know *why* or just more about a particular topic, and in this regard, combining this book with Zeilik's or Arny's works very well.

The book contain short information on every aspect of astronomy.It is well written with good methodology.The draft are not so clear and in astronomy they have to be three dimssion coloured drafts.

About the Author
KLAUS HINKELMANN, PHD, is Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Department of Statistics, where he also served as both graduate administrator and department head. In addition to being a Fellow of both the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Professor Hinkelmann is a member of the International Statistical Institute, and has served as a council member of the International Biometric Society. He was editor of Biometrics and the Current Index to Statistics.

OSCAR KEMPTHORNE, SCD, was Emeritus Professor of Statistics and Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University. He was a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and a member of the International Statistical Institute. In addition, Dr. Kempthorne was a past president of the Eastern North American Region (ENAR) of the International Biometric Society, a former chairman of statistics within the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a past president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

part of a two volume series on experimental design

This is one of a two volume series of books on experimental design. There are many fine books out on experimental design, some are very theoretical and others are very applied. I particularly like the book by Wu and Hamada which is very modern and rigorous. These books provide a very rigorous treatment of classical experimental design. The authors are expert statisticians with a great deal of experience from both the practical and academic viewpoints. These books are worthy of a statistician's bookshelf.

A decent book, but not my first pick

This book has a lot of information, no doubt about it. And you may find some things in it that you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere (such as non-linear damage theories, fretting, shock and impact, etc). However, the book is quite theoretical, and information is scattered over various chapters, sometimes making it difficult to find what you're looking for. And when you do find it, the information is often not presented in a precise and detailed manner, which is important whenever you attempt to extend theory to real-life problems. I found this to be the case with the strain-based fatigue discussion, and especially the fracture mechanics coverage, which is cursory at best. I recommend that you first check out Dowling's book ("Mechanical Behavior of Materials"). I have found it to be much more useful.

excellent reference for mechanical design

It is a very good book. Gives a broad explanation of failure considerations in the mechanical design process. It is complemented with examples that help to understand. It is a very technical book. Do not expect to pretty color pictures. Math is stated in a sequential way that can be undestood pretty easily. When disscussing a topic recalls some basics before touching partcular details. It is not an introductory book. A book on mechanical of materials would be a excellent complement. Excellent as a reference.

excellent graduate text covering both time and frequency domain methods

In 1981 I used this book for a graduate seminar that I taught on time series analysis at UC Santa Barbara. The course was successful because I followed the text closely. It presents the material in a rigorous and cogent manner. At the time there were a few competing books but some emphasized time domain methods and others were strictly frequency domain approaches. Fuller balances the two very well and his book is better written and organized than most of the competitors at that time (1981).
Today there are a lot more books to choose from. You can check my listmania list on time series books to get an idea. I particularly like Brockwell and Davis' book as a competitor to Fuller for a graduate level time series seminar.

A too much teorical book

Who consults the index of this book may be sure of finding there all the aspects of quality control,from quality assurance to mathematical aspects rarely found on books of this purpose (like "Data Filtering" or "Furrier Transforms of Data"). Whatever, all this mathematical aspects have their development of a very theorical way, with a very small number of examples. If we wish to tell in other way, this book is not an indicated one to implementation of a quality control, being in fact very mathematical "strong" in presentation of some concepts (always without examples). There's no necessity of demonstrations not even of mathematical integers even in the aplication of some advanced concepts of statistic. It has a good chapter about sampling, in the diverse phisical forms, and after a huge chapter about "data analisys" where, with so many themes and so mathematical material, none of them is very well explained making impossible any pratic aplication. A more correct name to this book would be "Further Analysis in Quality Control" or " Advanced Subjects in Quality Control." The sub-chapter about Filtration of Noise, between others, seems very mathematical being lots of others simpler aspects to ilustrate. For being a small book, even the complex is detailed.

Though anatomical drawings would have clarified this section, symbols indicate which injuries require a doctor's care and which respond to first aid. Complex concepts are explained clearly and related to the athlete's training. Exactly what I needed . . .

An excellent book. At the age of 40 I pay for my active lifestyle with some aches and pains; this book is helping me live pain free. Unlike many PT type books, Levy is specific with his advice, not making you waste your time on dozens of stretches and exercises. He'll lead you directly to what you need to know to fix the problem. Other books seem shy about recommending specific exercises for specific problems; Levy's not. I ordered several of these types of books at once and eventually resold all the others. This is the one I kept.

EXCEPTIONAL MATERIAL ON FITNESS & SPORTS INJURIES

Alan Levy has done a fantastic job in putting together so much in one book. It has nearly everything an athlete requires to not only stay in shape but also treating all kinds of injuries from little niggles to those that need surgery. And its all been bonded together in a very organized and methodical manner.
To begin with Dr. Levy emphasizes the importance of warming up and stretching before and after workouts and shows how to do this. Next, he explains about nutrition for athletes. After that he lays out the benefits of and what it really means to stay healthy. This is followed by First-Aid for sports.
Starting with the fifth chapter he provides detailed information about what to know about the various parts of the body, their intricacies, and how they are used in sports and precisely what occurs with them when we feel pain or discomfort. For example, chapter 10 is about the Thigh and Hip, Chapter 6 for the Shoulder, and so on. In addition, he suggests various ways of diagnosing injuries correctly and how best to treat them. Whether an economical ready-made arch support will work, or one must see a qualified physician for a particular problem, Dr. Levy seems one not to miss a trick.
Then there is a chapter each on a specific sport and the most likely injuries to take place in every one of those and what all can be done to prevent them but if they do happen, then how to treat them. From Baseball to Running, Golf to Skiing, it has everything.
At the end he also suggests what to look for in a Sports Specialist.
Its only drawback is that understanding some of the material can be a daunting task as the lay person does not possess the expertise of Dr. Levy in Sports medicine.
And last but not the least, my knee ailment got cured courtesy of following the treatment plan outlined in the Sports Injury Handbook.
