Good reference, poor for beginners

I began learning about hardware design with this book. Now I use it for reference.
But for beginners, this is not a very good book. Although hardware design is somewhat difficult to explain, the book does not analyze subjects in detail or how circuits work. When it does try to explain topics, it does not do so clearly and provides few examples. Unless you have outside help (such as a teacher, professor, teaching assistant, etc.), I would definitely recommend finding another book to learn about hardware design because you will struggle while trying to figure out how things work (if you are a novice).

A Book Not To Read

This book is absolutely horrible. The Professor who teaches this class with this book HE WROTE, is utterly dispicible because of his teaching ability. This professor, at UC Irvine does not know the one bit in teaching a COMPLICATED subject like Digital Systems to a class who has had little to no experiece with this type of work. I hope this book is revoked for any reason, and hope that professor reads this review in order to gain some knowledge about the way he is teaching a class of Engineers in an era where knowledge is not automatically achieved, rather taught by knowledgable instructors.

Difficult to use

I suffered immensely trying to use this textbook. The author, while knowledgeable in the field, writes in pedantic, verbose technical jargon full of recursive definitions and unhelpful examples. Often, examples just show a completed procedure without bothering to go over the steps necessary to arrive at the answer. The absence of answers for end-of-chapter exercises is maddening. For autodidacts and instructors alike, I recommend looking elsewhere for material that aims to instruct rather than to dryly spit out facts with negligible explanations.

In her last book In Search of Leaders, Hilarie Owen turned the concept of leadership on its head. She demonstrated how leaders are not just those at the top of an organization. There is leadership potential in everyone and Hilarie demonstrated that, by following her own three stage model, any individual's potential could be released.
The difficulty is that, once an individual has discovered their own leadership skills within their own sphere of ambition, it is often very difficult to use those skills within a workplace environment. This is largely because organizations, too, need to change to accomodate the leadership skills of their employees.
In much the same way that Hilarie took readers of In Search of Leaders on a journey back in time, as a means of cementing our place in society today and tomorrow, this new book takes a similar route. Hilarie draws on the history of the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, right through to the Monarchies and the rise of the Modern State, to create a view of how organizations have evolved to their current state. She illustrates the issues facing them now, and the possible reasons for the problems they are now facing.
This book allows managers to rethink the shape of their organizations in a fresh and innovative way.

The current environment and management in organizations is not conducive to leadership development. Most large organizations in the world try to develop leaders through training, be it in-house programmes or external courses.

Editors should also issue a CD

Chemical engineers throughout the world rely on one standard reference book above all others. This one. Expanded since the third edition to almost thirty thousand pages of densely gathered data.
It has properties of the vast majority of chemicals that you are likely to encounter at an oil refinery or chemical plant. So much so that these days, an accompanying CD or DVD might make life simpler for you. A CD would give much easier searching. There is an online edition, which has the virtue that it can be updated at a central location.
But an offline CD still has its place. Especially in the context of a mobile lab or isolated plant. These might have no internet connection, or a very low bandwidth one. In such situations, it is the much less mass and volume of a CD compared to the hardcopy which is the main attraction.

This is the definitive text on the theory of primes in the form x^2 + ny^2. Problems with simple formulation like this (which primes can be written in that form, and for what n?) make the class field theory interesting and worth understanding. Those with interest in prime numbers would greatly appreciate the topics presented. Recommended for those with a strong background in number theory and algebra.

Excellent Intro to Chemical Engineering

This text is a concise, well-written, introductory text regarding mass, mole, and energy balances. Though the book does lack a little as far as its discourse on thermodynamics. There are a few typos, but that should not distract the reader from learning chemical engineering principles. Also, this book is a wonderful resource because of its extensive thermophysical properties tables and other important data. I have used these tables in fluids, kinetics, and heat/mass transfer.

I give this book ZERO stars rating because it is an extraordinarily lousy textbook. The book has so many typos and mistakes it will make you mad and drive you crazy at the same time. Way to much bologna! The worst textbook I have ever seen or read for a class. Put the stink in chemical engineering. Author lacks insight in many different ways. One way the author lacked perspective was not providing any student's solutions manual. Not having a solutions manual makes it very difficult to learn principles and details for solving complex calculus and advanced algebraic problems because you either must copy from someone else or get the royal going over. Seriously, no joke, you would be better off using schaum's outlines to help than this book. FIVE Thumbs Down.

NOT VERY SELF-EXPLANATORY FOR THE UNDERGRADUATE

Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes was the textbook I used in my very first engineering class many years ago. I was then a Chemical Engineering major, because I wanted an intellectual challenge; my course of study was then, and presumably still is, regarded as the toughest of all the academic fields in my school. With this work of Felder and Rousseau as the textbook that introduced so many of us into the world of chemical engineering, the reputation of the difficulty of this major was well deserved.

I graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and instead of exploring the world of engineering well beyond my college years, I decided to pursue a different route by becoming a mathematics instructor. I also have a Master's in the field of Mathematics Education, and my added exposure to this realm has served me quite well.

Though I have left the world of chemical engineering well behind me, I just thought that I might reflect upon a portion of my past and chip in my few paragraphs pertaining to this reference.Over the course of time, being an educator has taught me that in order to get students to understand the content of the material, you have to communicate and express the ideas quite clearly. This textbook is not exactly successful in that department.

For instance, the sections referring to unit conversions were presented rather haphazardly. My knowledge of unit conversions has expanded considerably since my undergraduate days, but back then, I did not really know how to follow what the authors were trying to express. For instance, the approach to converting the unit ratio centimeters per square second to kilometers per square year is a procedure that should be well laid out in several steps. Instead, in this book, you have this type of unit conversion expressed in one line, and as opposed to having the steps displayed in an orderly manner, all that you really get is a shortcut full of exponential gibberish.

Looking back at it now, I think that unless one comes from a background that demands mathematical rigor, I honestly do not see how anyone who uses this textbook can really obtain the insight needed to progress to intermediate engineering courses and graduate.

All in all, this is not a good textbook for the full-time college student who has other topics to deal with. For me, too much time was wasted trying to translate this material into a context that would be readable for the engineering novice. There was too much material crammed into each chapter, and the pain of trying to find a clue to get from one level of mastery to the next could only be magnified by the pedantry often expressed by the impatient professor.

This review is not to minimize the academic contributions of the authors. In fact, they have served the engineering profession quite well. On the basis of other comments I have read, I am willing to concede that this book might be an ideal publication for those with an intermediate technical background and who are looking for cross-referenced data in refining highly systematic specifications. However, I am not in agreement that this is an adequate first engineering course textbook.

This is an advanced text on electromagnetism. It assumes that the student has already completed a course on elementary electromagnetism. It is recommended that the student study other elementary textbooks, e.g.,Beyond the Mechanical Universe by Olenick and Apostol, before tackling this book. A wide range of topics on electromagnetism is discussed. A student who has gone through this book should be ready for Jackson's classic standard text.

does not do what it claims

This book claims to bridge the gap between undergrad book and Jackson's. But I do not find it achieved the goal. It contains some good sections and I use it only as a secondary book. I still have to use Jackson's as my primary source. But that is not to say I like Jackon's. I hate it like a lot of people do, but I do not find a better alternative. Electrodynmics is the only area that I have not found a very good grad level text book for self study. I am only studying the low frequency part. My interest is not in waves. So, my comments only apply to that part.

About the Cover: The cover illustration was made by combining three different U.S. Geological Survey digital data sets: a black and white digital orthophotograph, a digital elevation model, and a digital raster image of a topographic map. The observer viewpoint is at an altitude of 1200’ above the surface, in the vicinity of Massanutten Mountain, just east of Harrisonburg, VA. The colored lines and areas from the topographic map are transparent so that when combined, the underlying imagery is visible. These data sets are then draped over a surface generated from the digital elevation data. The cover illustrates the flexibility available to the cartographer in creating graphics using computer technology and digital data sets.

This book is pricey and uneven.

This title is billed as the Sixth Edition, and reflects the coming and going of co-authors. It is too bad that the editor had so little influence. Sections of this book that stick to their cartographic knitting are excellent. Historical information is very intersting. Basic explanations, such as the evolution of ellipsoids is very well done. Some of the writing is so bad it could have been extracted from a sophmore term paper, sprinkled with such inept phrases as "such as", "similarly", "however" and "in fact". The most glaring deficiency is in the area of computer technology. Either this material has not been updated since some earlier edition, or the author(s) are very uncomfortable with the subject matter. As examples: "Most common procedures used by cartographers have been translated into software programs written in special computer languages such as FORTRAN and C." "Today's well-rounded cartographer is routinely involved with these 'canned' (prewritten) mapping programs..." "The professionsal cartographer should, therefor, have a working knowledge of at least one computer language." We are regaled with three pages of detailed obselescent material on computer structure, but only 23 lines of overview on current instrument technology. There is a whole chapter on fonts and lettering, but no algorithm for conversion from Lat-Long to UTM. The central meridians for the UTM zones are not provided, nor is the DoD lettering scheme. One of the responsibilities of a text book is to arrange the subject matter in a structure where it can be easily referenced. This book reads like a series of articles of varying quality published under one cover, with overlap resolution left as an exercise for the reader.

A Little Surprised...

I am currently reading/studying this book and have found it be a bit choppy and not very well written. For a book of this magnitude I would have expected that a outline of the book to be written in chapter one. This book is about cartography but no definition is given until chapter two (it is assumed in the intro and panels). I just expected more and am currently looking for a supplimentary book to this one.

Cartography - must have title

This book is very valuable source of information for anyone wanting to learn or refresh his knowledge of cartographic principles. Great variety of topics is covered in details and well illustrated so understanding of topics should not be too difficult to grasp.

It is a little bit weak on modern GIS systems section and cartographic capabilities of those. It is understandable since it is 10 years old now. It would be good to have more pictures in the full colour section.

This book is used as a reference book for lot of other materials and for a good reason.
