The best book on history of mathematics

I first bought the firt edition about 25 years ago when I was still a matriculation student preparing the examination to university. This book has been with me for more than one fourth of a decade. I also own the second edition of the same book.
It is a pity that the new author did not take the opportunity to expand the book to a much wider scale. ( what I mean is not to a encycoplaedic but at least expand the history of mathematics in the 20 the century. Now back to the book. What makes this book different other ones, I think it is the historical intuition of Boyer makes this book eternal. Some book arrange the content chronologically and somes book arrange the content according to the topics. However, Boyer cleverly combined that two . Also, he also extinctly discuss the topics proportional to their importance in the history. There is not too much mathematics and
there is not too few mathematics, Just a few words to describe that is " that book is really well balanced " and gives you everything and also the range of audience is wide, coupled with the very very reasonable price, it is the book on mathematical history who are interested should own one.

In this second edition of the "Handbook of eating disorders" every chapter has been revised and rewritten with several new additional chapters in order to bring an up-to-date book on research and clinical experience in this field.
The editors Janet Treasure and Ulrike Schmidt are affiliated with Guys Hospital and Maudsley Hospital in London, while Eric van Furth is affiliated with the National Centre for Eating Disorders in the Netherlands. The 52 contributors are an all European group, except for five American researchers.
The book has 28 extensive chapters on the whole spectrum of eating disorders from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa to obesity. Each chapter has a logic structure with recent research and extensive references that will be useful for both the researcher and clinician. The chapter on children and adolescents is written by two professionals from the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London with useful information on diagnosis, assessment and management.
This book gives a current review of eating disorders that will be useful for every professional working in this field.

About the Author
JACOB FELD (1899-1975) was a prominent structural engineer in New York for many years with design responsibility for a number of important buildings, including the New York Coliseum, Guggenheim Museum, Yonkers Raceway, and Lincoln Center. From 1966 until his death in 1975, he was a partner in the firm of Feld, Kaminetzky & Cohen. Feld was a graduate of City College, receiving an honorary doctor of laws degree from that institution in 1972, as well as a PhD from the University of Cincinnati in 1922. He served as president of the New York Academy of Sciences and was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), which cited him as "Metropolitan Engineer of the Year" in 1969. Feld also received the Townsend Harris Award of the City College Alumni Association, the Alumni Award of the University of Cincinnati, and the French Order of Merit. He taught as a visiting professor at Purdue University, Northwestern University, and North Carolina State University.

KENNETH L. CARPER, a registered architect with degrees in both architecture and civil engineering, is a professor in the School of Architecture at Washington State University. He has received many teaching awards, including the 1994 all-university President's Faculty Excellence Award at WSU. A past chair of the ASCE Technical Council on Forensic Engineering, Carper is the current and founding Editor in Chief of the ASCE Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities. His professional awards include the national ASCE Daniel W. Mead and Richard Torrens Awards. In 1994, he was named "Engineer of the Year" by the Inland Empire Section of ASCE (Washington and Idaho). Carper has lectured extensively about structural failure to students, faculty, and professional groups of architects, engineers, and building officials in the United States, Canada, Europe, India, and Japan. Prior publications include the books Forensic Engineering and Forensic Engineering: Learning from Failures.

Essential reading for those in the profession

The book covers a wide range of failure issues and types of failures. It would be helpful if photo captions had more descriptive information and if diagrams or sketches had been prepared to illustrate the condition under which failure occurred. Nonetheless, an excellent text that should be widely read and part of the library of architects, engineers, contractors and deveopers.

Excellent book on review of failures in constructed projects by a man who was recognized as the best forensic engineer in the U.S., possibly in the world. It is a great source of information for active engineering and construction managers providing insight into causes of failure of constructed projects.

classic text on design, well presented

Gertrude Cox and William Cochran were both famous statisticians who were extremely good writers. This was the book on experimental designs in 1958 with a wealth of information on randomized block, factorial and fractional factorial designs. It is still a very useful and practical reference. However it does not include the modern advance in robust designs that can be found in a text like the recent one by Wu and Hamada. Box, Hunter and Hunter "Statistics for Experimenters" is another excellent text on the classical and practical designs in engineering and agricultural experiments.

Any serious student of factorial experimental design techniques should definitely read this book. It has a level of detail and sufficient explanation to move any practionier's competence along to the next level.
This book, however, is a bit too technically oriented for the begineer.

This book is seriously outdated and overpriced

I was forced to buy this book for my professional practice class in a university landscape architecture program about six years ago. At the time I thought I was buying a textbook which would be part of my permanent library. While taking the course I was shocked at how outdated the material was (like having copies of ancient mimeographed forms with "sample only" stamped across them). While there was some decent industry content included, I tossed this book aside and never opened it again. When studying for the licensure exams I turned to "Law and Practice for Architects" by Greenstreet, et al for really well written professional practice information. The only good thing I can say about this book was that it has held its value for resale. If you are in school, spend your money on a copy of "Time Saver Standards for Landscape Architects" instead... now that is a book that is a must have for anyone in this industry.

A great way to study for the EIT in a little time

I found this book much easier to study from that that big EIT book that is so famous. There are short derivations of equations and many example problems. The economics section was especially helpful for those who never studies economics in college. And best of all: This book helped me pass the EIT with just one month of studying! This book is a handy resource in the working world also.

I didn't get a single activity from this book.

I do science every week with my kindergarten class, so I am always looking for fun science experiments. I tried, but I didn't find a single thing in this book. One experiment was to take a bite of cereal, and then take another bite, but don't put it in your mouth. Stop before the spoon reaches your mouth. The cereal stays on the spoon because of gravity. I don't think watching someone not eat cereal is going to rock my students' world.

RE: GREAT TEXT FOR TEACHING TEST ENGINEERING

I received the Test Engineering textbook on-time. The textbook is new. I am very pleased and I will you this textbook in teaching future engineers.

Critial information

It is the very first book (that I'm aware of) written for test engineers and managers. This book is an overview of all types of testing.
The author's philosophy is excellent.....
"The author has never found a company or a project where it was considered in retrospect by those involved that too much was spent on a development test programme." Test Engineering by Patrick D. T. O'Connor.
When you consider that Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the Comet IV and the Challenger failed not because of negligence, but because critical data slipped through the cracks, or was misinterpreted, this book may just prevent that next tragic unknown from taking place. Or at least arm engineers, and managers, as to what is taking place.
Highly recommended, from one in the business.

Good content, publisher has not done its work...

A very good book in content, O'Connor covers the major issues, provides resources and methods for driving deeper into developing appropriate test plans and does an okay coverage of test management. The book could do better from a Test Philosophy perspective, although the chapter on management comes close.

The drawback is the publishers quality of reprinting the figures. At last count there were 8 figures with missing or illegible text. Mostly this is annoying and not detrimental to conveying the concepts. However, the flow charts on test management / test plans are so bad as to be nearly worthless. It could be an issue with the particular printing I have. As of this review I have attempted to contact the author and publisher, but I do not expect a response. Amazon replaced the book, but the replacement also had the problems.

So would I recommend the book, yes, but only IF the figures are taken care of, otherwise I would say find a different source. If the figures are resolved then I would rate it a strong 4, maybe a 5. If the author grows the test management material then it would be a strong 5.
