The Book Could Be Better But I Have Read Worse

1. This is a textbook for 3rd year electrical engineering students. Most people who read this book HAVE TO read it becuase it is a required text. The classic captive audience.
2. The author does not skip any more steps in his (her?) math derivations than other, similiar books I have had to use. You're a 3rd year EE student: suck it up, kiddo. Break out some printer spew and a #2 pencil; I'm sure you can get from here to there.
3. Many authors provide numeric solutions to SOME of the homework problems. ALL OTHER AUTHORS provide numeric answers to DRILL (PRACTICE) problems so that the reader can see if s/he has got the hang of it. THIS AUTHOR did not give answers to ANY of problems, drill or homework, in the book. This limits the effectiveness of the book as a teaching tool. It would be nice if answers to the drill problems could be posted on the internet (Hint, hint.)
4. The authors language is adequate for the discussion of the subject matter -- three phase power, transformers, induction motors, etc.
5. The book is too damn expensive.

Needs Revision

I used this book in my Junior year in School. As an EE/Math, this book is pretty good as far as the information goes in the book . This book doesn't overwhelm the reader with extra not required information.The CONCEPTS in this book are very clear as compare to the other two books I used. All what the author needs to do is to provide answers to the drill problems and some of the questions at the end of each chapter.

I have several problems with this book. First, the author does not provide numerical answers to the problems or the drill problems. This makes it very difficult to verify if the problem was solved correctly. Second, the examples are poorly written. It fails to answer many what-if questions one comes up with when reading the chapters. Third, the index is poorly written and makes it difficult to look up information.

Excellent Professional text and reference. Buy it if you make sauces!

`The Sauce Bible' by culinary educator, David Paul Larousse is one of those very few books you find which are specifically written for culinary professional. The first clue is the high list price of $54.95. The second is that textbook specialist, John Wiley and Sons publish it. The third is the fact that the book began as an essay on sauce painting, which the average foodie will admire, but, to my knowledge, will virtually never try to reproduce. The fourth clue is that the quantities for many of the recipes are a lot larger than one would need for a dish for four or six. The fifth clue is the large amount of narrative and graphics devoted to explaining the relationships between members of the various sauce families, based on the famous French `mother sauces'.

That is not to say the average cooking enthusiast couldn't get something from this book. The biggest question is whether this book is better than the standard modern work in English, James Peterson's `Sauces'. The very first comparison I did was on the two books' treatments of `beurre blanc' or white butter sauce commonly used for fish and often used as an exemplar of `nouvelle cuisine' cooking, although the recipe is much older than the 1970's. I think the treatment of this by the two different books is a good indication of the books' relative strengths and weaknesses. While Larousse has, by a very rough count, 480 recipes to Peterson's 350, Peterson gives more details on the techniques used for each individual recipe, while Larousse spends more time on general material. Peterson's recipe, with introduction and variations, takes up over three pages, including tips on saving the sauce for later use. Larousse' recipe for basic `beurre blanc' takes about half a page, although later recipes such as Bercy and Chambertin are variations. Oddly, Peterson includes in the basic recipe a step to strain the solids, primarily the shallot, out of the final product, while Larousse give no such instruction until we get to the recipe for the Chambertin sauce.

So, for the amateur chef, Peterson may really be the better book, since he is more detailed in his recipes for very common sauces, even if he is a bit fussy for the amateur. But, I really think that a dedicated foodie will want both books. While Peterson is probably the better quick reference, Larousse is better in understanding the relations between all members of the sauce families. And, he certainly covers more different classically named sauces. Peterson, for example, gives no mention or recipe for Chambertin sauce, at least it is neither in his list of recipes or in his index. And, you will certainly want Larousse if you wish to understand sauce painting the way they do it a fancy restaurants and on the `Iron Chef America'.

I have seen at least two less expensive trade paperback books on sauces and while I believe both are decent, I strongly recommend one of these two books for the dedicated foodie in preference to a shorter book. I am especially respectful of Larousse's tutorial on the making of stocks. His recipes and techniques are certainly useable by the home cook, although they would meet no one's notion of quick cooking, as the longer ones take from eight to twelve hours for optimum results. The only thing I missed in this volume was the concept so artfully stated by Deborah Madison where she proclaims that stocks should be crafted to meet their specific uses.

Highly recommended for the professional and the dedicated foodie.

Readable and informative starting point

I've read a number of books and literally thousands of web pages of information about Sarbanes-Oxley, and have to rank this book as the best starting point for stakeholders who are peripherally involved in compliance. The reasons are:
(1) It's readable! This is not a dry, boring tome, but a highly readable summary of Sarbanes-Oxley, what it is (and isn't), and realistic examples and anecdotes to reinforce the material.
(2) It covers a surprisingly lot of ground for a book aimed at a non-practitioner audience. The Control Smart Framework, detailed advice on identifying threats and vulnerabilities, and how to protect yourself are invaluable to anyone directly or indirectly involved in Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
In addition to the rich information and clear explanations of key elements of Sarbanes-Oxley I like the appendices, which also provide useful information - especially appendices B (Key Performance Indicator Reporting), C (Examples of Key Performance Indicators) and D (Control Activities).
This book will quickly get you up-to-speed about Sarbanes-Oxley and its ramifications, and will do so relatively painlessly compared to other books on the basics of the Act.
If you're looking for a more in-depth book, especially one that addresses the scope and complexity of Section 404 compliance, I highly recommend "How to Comply with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404: Assessing the Effectiveness of Internal Control (ISBN 0471653667). If you are an IT professional I strongly recommend visiting Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ASIN B00006BW74), which makes available a free 84-page document titled "IT Control Objectives for Sarbanes-Oxley". Busting the Sarbanes-Oxley myths!

Boards of all shapes and sizes are wondering about the affect that Sarbanes-Oxley act will have upon their operations, accountability, and liability. But what about the managers running the day-to-day operations? Mr. Green kept his promise to "introduce groundbreaking and practical 'Control Smart' approach that not only meets the requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley, but also alerts you if operational controls stop working or are otherwise compromised."

While larger companies can afford to spend millions of dollars to implement control system monitoring tools, managers of small to mid-sized companies can be unsure of how to move forward if their budgets can't accommodate expensive advisors and systems. Mr. Green tells us in a forthright and clear manner that we must not depend on others to audit accountability into our reporting systems any more than we are able to test reliability or quality into our products. He places responsibility for our transparent transactions squarely on the shoulders of every manager and every employee throughout the organization.

The "Control Smart" approach to understanding where we need to make transformational changes and where we can live with transitional changes is easy to understand even as it is complex and difficult to execute. But we must all attempt to do so. Green insists that we can "walk our talk by taking the culture of our companies seriously. We are able to create positive values as company objectives and appropriately compensate those who uphold the company image." In this well written book, you will find the answer to just what it is that managers today need to do to implement the spirit and the law of Sarbanes-Oxley.

Informative and Enjoyable Reading

Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOA) is probably the single most important law affecting corporate governance and financial disclosure since the US securities laws of the early 1930s.
This book describes in a practical and concise manner the complexity of Sarbanes-Oxley Act for non-financial managers and directors, and gives a pathway model to develop an efficient control environment of businesses. I found very useful and straightforward to implement the Control Smart approach to help obliterate vulnerabilities and develop a strong defense against corporate fraud.
I think that this book is a valuable, must read guide for both, financial and non-financial managers. I would also recommend it as reference manual for management training programs as well as business schools.

An excellent undergraduate-level textbook in electroceramics

The electroceramics community, in general, has been suffering from a lack of good textbooks which cover all major fields of interest of the subject in a clear and comprehensive manner. The book by Moulson and Herbert is an outstanding exception to that. It can conveniently be used as a senior undergraduate or a first year graduate text. The first 2 chapters of the book summarize the prerequisite background needed in the solid state sciences and ceramic/materials processing, respectively. In the following chapters, a wide range of materials such as conductors, linear dielectrics, piezoelectrics, magnetic materials etc. are presented. The text is easy to read. The underlying physical principles of each subject are well blended with the materials related phenomena, thus providing the the reader with the "broader picture" in a concise fashion. The book contains well-chosen self study problems at the end of each chapter which address practical engineering problems as well as fundamental principles. It is my hope that more books like this will come along soon so that the materials science and engineering students are as well served as their peers in other disciplines in the sciences and engineering. I highly recommend this book for those who are seeking a good textbook and/or for those who would like to self-study the subject.

It have a nice introduction to dielectrics and semiconductors from a solid state physics point of view with may help the engineers and students to find practic use of the solid state theory.

About the Author
About the authors NORMAN ASHFORD is Professor of Transportation Planning at the Loughborough University of Technology in England. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Dr. Ashford lived in North America for 15 years, during which he served as a civil engineering consultant in Canada, did postgraduate work at Georgia Institute of Technology, and began his teaching career at Florida State University. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Chartered Institute of Transport as well as a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. He has published many papers and is the coauthor of Transportation Engineering: Planning and Design (1989), Airport Operations (1983), and the author of Mobility and Transport for Elderly and Handicapped Persons (1982). PAUL H. WRIGHT is Professor of Civil Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, where he has taught since 1963. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Georgia and a member of many professional societies, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), and the American Society of Engineering Education. Dr. Wright received a Sigma Xi Faculty Award and ITE's Technical Paper Award (Southern Section) in 1976. He has been active in continuing education programs and has served as a consultant to transportation agencies in the United States and Central America. The author of numerous papers, he is coauthor of three other books: Highway Engineering, Fifth Edition (1987), Transportation Engineering: Planning and Design (1989), and Introduction to Engineering (1989). He earned his PhD in civil engineering (transportation planning) from Georgia Tech.

Very good book

This book is an excellent alternative to Agresti's "Categorical Data Analysis" for the analyzing of categorical data. The book is comprehensive and less mathematically demanding than Agresti. The book does a tremendous amount with contingency tables and epidemiologic types of data and has many good worked out examples.

There are a couple of features that could be improved in the next edition:

1) Give the statistical tests that are presented names.

Often statisitical procedures/tests are given and they are not given an explicit name. I think that this is an intentional practise of the authors, but I found it very confusing. For instance, there are many chi-square tests out there, each of which can be written in different ways. Why not call them "Pearson's chi-square", "Cochrane's chi-square", etc... so that the reader knows what the authors are talking about?

2) Not enough time devoted to the subject of combining simple proportions (i.e. not fourfold tables) from several samples/studies. Only one method is shown when several others exist.

3) ALL the common methods used to transform proportions should be presented and explained. For instance, the arcsine transformation is left for an exercise.

4) The writing was a bit terse and cryptic at times. I wish the authors had opted for a simpler English sentence structure and aimed to write at as low a level as practically possible. This encourages understanding of the topic rather than the development of eloquent prose.

5) The references were good but the way they were cited was not. In line author names is an outdated reference method that bogs down sentences and clutters pages with useless text. Simple numeric citation markers would have been better.

6) Bayesian methods are developed, but not a much as I might otherwise have hoped.
