Second book I read when trying to figure out whether my son had autism/PDD. Not for the parent who is faint of heart, but excellent, balanced, and objective resource for the parent who wants a deeper understanding of the research literature. Depending on your educational background, some chapters may be incomprehensible (e.g., the chapter on neurochemicals), but almost all are accessible to the well-educated and attentive layperson.

Very Useful Cobol Book

I bought this book because I already owned it's predecessor (same title, but for VS COBOL) and had found it to be extremely valuable. I still have it and use it occasionally when I have to work on old programs and need to clearify something. I have been coding in COBOL since the late 1960's. This is the best book I have ever owned on the topic. It is well organized and provides the answers I need when confronted by something I do not have committed to memory. I have used it so much it is falling apart and I need a new copy. I own several other COBOL books (about a half dozen) that are not bad, but this one is the best. I have been hoping Dr. Brown would come out with a new version covering COBOL for LE. I will buy it if and when he does.

Micro Focus COBOL? A little old to be relevant.

The book truly was in great shape; clean and unmarked. Unfortunately the book was printed in 1982, which I didn't see from the picture. The book was well written and informational but was written for a much older version of Micro Focus COBOL than I had.

Improved my French beyond any doubt

The are many books on French verbs but the emphasis is usually on conjugations. What distinguish this book from others is that it is focused on how to actually use those verbs. I am surprised to find that I am the first person to review this book because it is so useful. Before I had the book, there were many verbs which were only in my "passive" vocabulary -- i.e. when I read or hear them, I would have a sense of what they mean. After reading this book, however, many more verbs have become part of my "active" vocabulary. This means that I can now actually use them in a conversation. The examples given in the book have helped me to have a much better grasp of how and when to use those. I am very pleased with the improvements I have made. What I do with the book is that everyday I would read a couple of pages at random. After reading the examples given for a particular verb, I would imagine myself in situations where I can use the verb. This has proven to be a very effective way to integrate the words learned into my vocabulary.

A Great Book for an Intermediate to Advanced French Student

As the title indicates, the book lists 750 verbs and demonstrates their uses with sample sentences. It is not the same as the usual verb book which lists and conjugates many of the most basic verbs, but instead it concentrates on the meaning of more advanced verbs and supplies sample sentences. The book is intended for someone who already has a basic knowledge of French. In the main text, the verbs are not conjugated, but there is an appendix at the end of the book of grammatical tables in which verbs are conjugated. The author assumes that the reader already has a knowledge of basic verbs such as "to be", "to speak", "to go", etc. but instead dwells on more advanced verbs, such as s'insister pour que (+ the infinitive) meaning to insist on or opter entre quelque chose meaning to choose among a group of things. The book does demonstrate more complex usages of some of the simpler verbs - for example, parler dans quelque chose meaning to speak into something such as a microphone, or laisser quelque chose meaning to leave something (somewhere or for someone). Sentences are given for each verb which I found extremely helpful, although it is necessary to go to the appendix if you are not sure of the conjugation of the verb.
Overall, I believe this book would be very helpful in improving the grammar and vocabulary of an intermediate to advanced French student.

Excellent...not not for everyone.

This is an amazing book, but it will be of little use to you unless you have AT LEAST an upper-intermediate level of French. It really digs into the full use of verbs to enhance usage in written, and eventually spoken, French. A must-have for upper-level learners.

The F-4 Navy Fighter Weapons School (nicknamed "Top Gun") was founded in March 1969 to train Phantom jet pilots to better fight Soviet-supplied MiG-17s in Vietnam. While no book can match the electrifying big-screen flight sequences of Top Gun the movie, this account capably describes the creation of the school at Miramar Air Station, California, and the combat tactics taught there. It shows soldiers undergoing dangerous training for a deadly game, with a pilot a month killed, often in a ball of fire. Much of the narrative depicts gripping combat action over the skies of Vietnam, where pilots seeking to push to "the edge of the envelope" were frustrated by rules of engagement. Recommended.

Excellent narrative history for the non-aviator history buff

Really a fun book - it is aimed at the general reader and is thus not academically oriented, but its factual information does have academic value. I read the original edition about 7 or 8 years ago, but just recently reread much of it for some research on the F-4 Phantom II. Low on technical data, instead the author gives the history of the human interactions that spawned the Top Gun Fighter Weapons School (which they made a really bad Tom Cruise movie about, but with F-14s). Much of it is told by the Navy officers who were there, and Wilcox brings it all together to explain what was wrong with the Naval air war in Vietnam and how the Navy fixed it.

Even Better Than Wings of Fury!

When I finished reading Robert Wilcox' Wings of Fury, I was impressed. I enjoyed it so much I wanted to read his earlier work Scream of Eagles (The Creation of TopGun).
Sincerely this is even better than Wings of Fury. There are plenty of first person accounts (sea stories) of TopGun's genesis and dogfights against the VPAF. The USN was less than enthusiastic about funding and equipping this new school in 1969. When you read about this and put yourself back in time, it's amazing that TopGun ever got started. But that's just part of the story...
The F-8 Crusader's days were numbered as the F-4 Phantom was replacing the 'sader in the Fleet. The men that developed TopGun knew that BVR missile shots were not the answer. Pilots needed to know how to dogfight and get the maximum performance out of their airplane and work as a team (both as a section of fighters and as a Pilot/RIO team). TopGun provided the cadre to teach fleet Phantom crews to build this teamwork.
If you're a fan of the F-4 Phantom, read this book. If you're a fighter aviation history buff, read this book. After you read this, go read Marshall Michel's CLASHES:Air Combat Over North Vietnam 1965-1972. You'll be shaking your head, wondering if the USN and USAF were fighting the same war. Makes you kinda wonder why the USAF scaled back its Agressor squadrons in recent years.

Density estimation has long been recognized as an important tool when used with univariate and bivariate data. But the computer revolution of recent years has provided access to data of unprecedented complexity in ever-growing volume. New tools are required to detect and summarize the multivariate structure of these difficult data. Multivariate Density Estimation: Theory, Practice, and Visualization demonstrates that density estimation retains its explicative power even when applied to trivariate and quadrivariate data. By presenting the major ideas in the context of the classical histogram, the text simplifies the understanding of advanced estimators and develops links between the intuitive histogram and other methods that are more statistically efficient. The theoretical results covered are those particularly relevant to application and understanding. The focus is on methodology, new ideas, and practical advice. A hierarchical approach draws attention to the similarities among different estimators. Also, detailed discussions of nonparametric dimension reduction, nonparametric regression, additive modeling, and classification are included. about the only practical book on the topic

There are a number of good books dealing with univariate density estimates. Some are very theoretical and some are very practical. My favorite is the one by Silverman because it provides intuition for the kernel density estimation methods and gets to the key point. David Scott has produced a volume that is somewhat longer than Silverman's and is the only book I have found for estimating multivariate densities. He writes very clearly on a difficult topic and provides good graphical information.

Excellent treatment of the histogram

This self-contained title represents a thorough treatment of both univariate and multivariate density estimation, with an emphasis on multivariate applications not found in other texts. A valuable, and perhaps unique, feature of this book is its clear discussion of the theory of kernel density estimation in terms of the conventional histogram, the latter being quite intuitive to most students.
The author uses applied mathematics, expected value operations, and asymptotic theory to draw general conclusions about the relative performance between different density estimation techniques. The purpose is to provide estimators that are "optimal" for higher dimensioned problems, since the computational burden grows exponentially with higher dimensions (thus making exploratory data analysis more expensive). With this in mind, the author is justified to show how the thorough treatment of theory relates to practice and visualization.
Ideas are reinforced by many problems at the end of each chapter (I regret that the answers to these problems are not included, or would have otherwise preferred just a few more examples). One nice feature is the author puts boxes around the most important theorems and results, making them easier to identify for reference purposes later. There is an emphasis on the way univariate concepts extend to lower dimensional multivariate problems, so that only a minority of the text might be considered exclusively multivariate in scope. The book contains a valuable list of references and a terse but useful appendix on 3-D computer visualization.
As a result, this text educates on more than density estimation, but does so assuming a fairly sophisticated level of audience education and background beyond the first few chapters. Since most of the terminology and basic concepts are defined early on, yet the most interesting applications and methods are discussed toward the end, this title is not easily skimmed. I have found this book cited often by other texts in this fields.
