the key is to use it as a reference text

I am currently using this massive book as it is the required text for my Engineering Math I course (MS Mech Eng). I heartily agree with others who claim to find this book is not thorough enough in the subjects it covers. BUT, out of curiosity I have delved into the book and studied the chapters covering material I am familiar with I saw in previous courses (Diff Equations, 4 Calculus courses, Control Systems, Linear Systems, Numerical Methods) and I have to say... it is an ALL encompassing book, and the tremendous amount of material in it has is a credit to itself. Do not criticize this book because you failed in understanding a subject when using it, I myself am currenly a victim of this situation. Go find a book which treats only the topic (Laplace, Fourier, Linear Algebra, etc.) you're covering now, study it, and return it. Keep Kreyszig's as a handy reference. Mathematics is an extensive science, this "handbook" for us beginners is one of the best there is. Question: Did any of you Mechanical Engineers use MARKS' Handbook for your Fluid Mechanics course, or Shigley's Machine Design Handbook for learning how to design gears?

Good Reference....and thats it

This book is great as a reference. You are trying a problem in Complex Analysis, and you are stuck, and you want to recall the Cauchy Integral Theorem for multiply connected domains, and thats when you need an excellent resource like this one. Flip a few pages, get what you want, and get back to the problem.

BUT, if you want to LEARN things, if you want to know WHAT a multiple connected domain is, what the various theorems are, then NO....Kreyszig isnt what you need.

You need a textbook in Complex Analysis then, not a All-in-One reference manual, which is what Advanced Engineering Mathematics by Kreyszig actually is.

I will give it three stars, because it really is very comprehensive, an excellent addition to a Math Majors library. Or for that matter, to even an engineers library, but it certainly cannot be used to learn things for the first time.

Its a very good reference text, assuming you have learnt your ABCs from somewhere else. Although it covers a lot, it doesnt cover things in a way that would motivate students to learn new ideas or concepts. Its a mathematical cook-book, its only got the array of techniques in it, not the theory and the motivation.

For those, you need to try the traditional textbooks in the different areas.

This book is an all-encompassing book dealing with all (I am not joking) topics of advanced engineering mathematics required by practicing engineers and students. This is not meant to be used as an introductory text during a math course but as a reference manual for practical applications once you go beyond your math course. If you are looking for a comprehensive math book with consistent notation and style of writing, look no further-get this book.

This really works!

Over ten years ago, my former company hired Dr. Imrie to reduce the back injury incidents at their manufacuring plant. Having suffered thru the pain, legal problems, financial problems .... etc., I approached the invitation with skepticism. I followed this program with desperation as nothing else was working. It is not an instant fix, rather it is life commitment (kind of like brushing your teeth everyday). The book explains why your back is hurting, what can be done about it, what can't be done about it, and how to overcome the obstacle of debilitating pain and go on to lead a healthy active life. It takes time (8 min. a day) but it leads to an injury resistant back. Companies who are looking for looking for Occupational Injury prevention should take a second look at this program. I am noting for the record, although having met Dr. Imrie and particpated in his workshop, I am not affiliated or in anyway connected to or profiting from this book. On a personal note, I think it is really funny and quite sad to try to help someone mired in the cycle of pain and debilitation along with the accompanying "quick fixes", pain reliever addiction, alcoholism, self-pity and on and on..., to try to help them with the techniques this book offers and hear them say, "I can't do that!" The difference between this book and the other many books I purchased on back injuries is not the exercises, they are all very similar. Rather Dr. Imrie focuses on the HOW to do them. This one very simple technique makes all the difference between effectiveness and just doing exercises by rote with no results.

The book does good job of outlining the causes of back pain. It also shows and demonstrates you how to assess your own personal back status, and then recommends exercises and steps that should eventually reduce back aches and problems.

Best common sense evaluation of back pain causes and preventive strategies I have seen. Written so a layman can read and understand it. Stretching and strength exercises controlled my sciatica and added years to my ability to compete in running events. If you are willing to work to be well, this book is the bible for a healthy back.

Don't buy this!

I used this text for my organic labs (2 semesters, for majors). I thought the book was pitiful. From the undergrad's perspective, it was disorganized, unclear, verbose; generally excessive. The black and white pages with black line figures are not exactly a pleasure to read. I HAD to buy it. I hope you don't!

Advanced undergraduate PDE text.

This 1992 title by Walter A. Strauss (professor at Brown) has become a standard for teaching PDE theory to junior and senior applied math and engineering students in many American universities. Having been the actual class grader for two terms in 2004-2005, (and another year an informal teaching assistant), I found many of the students struggling with the concepts and exercises in the book. Admittedly the style of writing here is dense and if the reader does not have a strong background in the requisite topics (including physics), chances are high he or she will face a grand level of frustration with the exposition and the subject as a whole. One would need perseverance and dedication working numerous hours with this text before things start to settle in. After about the second or third chapter onward, those who were still taking the class had an easier time understanding the material and doing the excercises.

The second edition (2007) adds new exercises, subject material, comments, and corrections throughout. Contentwise, after a brief and important introductory chapter (which should not be skipped by any reader!) the book first focuses on the properties and methods of solutions of the one-dimensional linear PDEs of hyperbolic and parabolic types. Then after two separate chapters, one on the trio of Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin conditions and the other on the Fourier series, the author embarks upon the discussion of elliptic PDEs via the methods of harmonic analysis and Green's functions. Subsequently there is a brief introduction to the numerical techniques for finding approximate solutions to the three types of PDEs, mostly centered on the finite differences methods.

The beginning of roughly the second half of the text is devoted to the higher-dimensional wave equations and boundary conditions in plane and space, utilizing the machinery of Bessel and Legendre functions, and ending up with a section on angular momentum in quantum mechanics. In the following, Dr. Strauss brings up the discussion of the general eigenvalue problems, and then proceeds with a treatment of the advanced subject of weak solutions and distribution theory. (This topic is normally skipped in an undergraduate course.) The last two chapters are a pure delight to read, dealing with the PDEs from physics as well as a survey of the nonlinear phenomena (shocks, solitons, bifurcation theory, water waves). A few appendixes at the end, summarize the analysis background needed for the course and must be consulted before and during the first reading.

All in all this is a very splendid source for all the applied math and engineering students, that can be used in conjuction with other references to help break through the conceptual barriers. In fact, I recommended the book by Stanley Farlow to our students and many found the presentation there very modular and accessible. For example, some of the Strauss' homework problems, such as solving the Poisson equation on an annulus, were subjects of a single chapter in Farlow. In any event, please make sure to check out this book's official accompanying student solutions manaual for extra help on doing the homework problems, and hopefully learning your course's target material in a more effective manner.

What are you guys talking about? This book is AMAZING!

I have never commented on a book, up until now... and I do so only because I don't think that this book gets enough credit.

People have complained Strauss may not have explained some proofs in as much detail as he could have, people complained that he didnt give enough examples, I think this is more of a problem with the readers than the writers. If you need someone to hold your hand through every step and detail, I think you should reconsider why you are studying what you study.-

I am an undergraduate at NYU, one of the best research institutes for PDE's. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it gives an amazing description of what PDE's are, how to solve them, and how they are used in science. One thing I REALLY enjoyed about this book was it did not do what many other books do: first dive into seperation of variables and focused only on that. Instead Strauss shows how to solve first and second order equations without boundary conditions, giving a very elegant prose doing so!

However, I think much of the problem that people are having with this book is that it's not a "one-size fits all." (Which I don't think any book can be!) If you are a Scienctist or Engineer and just want to learn PDE's to solve problems in science.. find another book, because this book is not the book for you.

That being said, if you are Mathematics student or interested in a more deep study of PDEs this is really a good book for you. You definitely should have taken Calc. 1-3, Linear Alegbra, ODE, and I recommend one semester of Analysis (for function spaces) before tackling this book, that is what I had, and I loved this course.

PDE is a difficult subject/course and Strauss does an amazing job at explaining it, if someone like me can get PDEs so well from this course, than I seriously believe that complaints about this book is due to fault in the readers and not the writer.

A Truism: This is a terrible book on a fascinating subject

May I begin by stating that my critique is based on having read and used the first 7 chapters, with some familiarity with chapters 9, 11, and 13. With that said, just about every NEGATIVE comment and review posted prior to this review, I believe, is for the most part quite accurate and nightmarishly true. In particular, Strauss states the obvious, while omitting key and crucial steps (this isn't limited just to his proofs). One might notice that the last comment is similar to the Rudin style. Let me assure you that unlike Rudin, Strauss' presentation is not elegant, it does not inspire, and simply cannot be compared to Rudin. Some other major flaws include: hasty organization, lack of depth and breath in theory, and the problem sets consist mostly of trivial proofs and unimaginative applications. I would not recommend this book under any circumstances. If you want to learn PDEs, take the graduate course.

If you are unfortunate enough to be forced to read this book, here is some advice:

::Prerequisites::

It is explicitly stated in the preface that this book is intended

for undergraduates at the junior/senior level. I believe that in order to learn anything meaningful from Strauss, it requires that you have already had the following courses: calculus, multivariate calc (vector calc), linear algebra, analysis, and ordinary differential eqns. (Complex analysis, is not necessary, but does illuminate specific areas. Fourier analysis, is not necessary. Since half the books tries to establish main theorems of Fourier analysis--may I add, not at a rigorous level.)

Part of the reason why this book is abhorred so much, is that it assumes the reader is somewhat 'mathematically mature'. To many this process begins after multivariable calc (unless you took the rigorous honors) with an *upper* division linear algebra or analysis course (lower division lin. alg. doesn't count). This is where the student is first asked to write his/her own proofs. After such courses, expressions such as "it is easy to show..." and "the reader can verify for him/herself..." imply that the student is encouraged, if not expected, to actually do it for themselves.

The student who has taken the aforementioned courses, should be adequately prepared to read Strauss. However, students with this much (actually its not much at all) preparation will probably find Stauss' book a joke and lacking in rigor. Ch 5 on Fourier Series attempted to develop L_2 theory and tried to set Fourier series on a rigorous base, but I feel it failed miserably.

::Conclusion::

Only mathematics majors will probably get something meaningful out of this book, but only if they are sufficiently prepared. Other like engineers or physicists, could learn PDEs from this book, but it is highly unlikely.

::Recommendations::

If you really want to learn PDEs, you should skip taking an undergraduate PDE course that uses this book and take a Graduate PDE course. You will heavily on analysis, thus try to take an Analysis Honors course at your school.

Good overview of distributed java methods

Most books on distributed java cover only one aspect (eg. RMI) in a level of detail that is really booring and time consuming to follow. This book gives a good coverage of available distributed computing methods in java (eg. RMI, CORBA, Voyager, etc.). None of the methods are covered in great detail but they are covered well enough to understand them and to know what you need to search for information about if you do implement one of them. The real value of this book is that it provides a clear overview of what methods can be used in distributed java so that informed decisions can be made as to which one should be implemented in a project. The only downside I see to this book is that there are a number of gramatical mistakes. The mistakes don't make the book unreadable and can be overlooked because the author is European, and English probably was not his first language. This downside is relatively minor, and the author's English is overall very good. An editor should have been used to catch these mistakes.

Do not buy this book if you don't understand object oriented programming and are not an experienced programmer. If you don't understand how to program, this book will be a waste of your time.

A number of the key practical methods used to study this phenomenon are discussed, as are a number of the key surface reactions. Finally, a number of other related topics associated with energy conversion are discussed.

Volumes 3 and 4, "Fuel Cell Technology and Applications" open with an overview of a range of sustainable energy supplies for fuel cell development. The key issue of fuel storage is considered in detail, before a detailed discussion of the most important types of fuel cells and their applications is presented. Among these, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell systems, alkaline fuel cell modules and systems, phosphoric acid fuel cells, direct methanol fuel cells, molten carbonate fuel cells and solid oxide fuel cells are covered in depth. The use of fuel cells in a range of systems is then considered, including portable systems, propulsion systems and electric utility systems. In addition to domestic and industrial systems, use of fuel cells in such novel environments as the space shuttle and submarines is addressed. Finally, Volume 4 closes with a discussion of the future prospects of fuel cell systems.

About the Author
Wolf Vielstich started research work on Fuel Fells and Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis at Ruhrchemie / Oberhausen. Working in the field of Fundamental and Applied Electrochemistry at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of Bonn University, he completed his Habilitation in Physical Chemistry in 1962. From 1965 he was a professor and director at the Bonn Institute. His special interest was new experimental methods like Rotating Ring Electrodes, online MS, Insitu IR and UHV-analysis of electrode surfaces, as well as to Batteries and Fuel Cells. His work in Electrochemistry has resulted in more than 250 publications, over 10 patents, books on Fuel Cells and Electrochemical Kinetics, and textbooks on Electrochemistry. From 1986 to 1993, Professor Vielstich was co-ordinator of the first European project on the DMFC and in 1998 he received the Faraday Medal of the Royal Chemical Society, UK.

Arnold Lamm has been involved in industrial research in this field for over 7 years, firstly at the DaimlerBenz research centre in Ulm, Germany, where his projects included methanol-reforming, methanolcatalysis, reactor engineering, thermodynamic calculations and system engineering of PEMFC-systems based on methanol. He also worked on the development of a simulation program as a basis for the first methanol-reformer car Necar III. He also worked as Project leader (PEMFC-power station) at the former AEG Energietechnik T&D, Frankfurt, Germany in a project with Ballard Generation Systems. Since 1997 Dr Lamm has been Senior manager for fuel cell systems at the central research of DaimlerChrysler, where his work has included a the demonstration of the worldwide first DMFC-vehicle, development of gasoline/diesel fuel processors for stationary and mobile applications and development of advanced components for FC-propulsion systems (e.g. air-supply). He holds over 40 patents on the fuel cell field.

Hubert A. Gasteiger has spent 9 years in academic research in fundamental electrocatalysis and fuel cell-related gas-phase catalysis, plus 5 years of industrial research and development in fuel cell components development. Dr Gasteiger was involved in the stack and stack-component design for GM / Opel's H2-powered Fuel Cell Cars (H1, H2, and H3), and since 1998 has been manager in stack components (membranes, catalysts, bipolar plate materials and coatings, MEAs) development at GM/Opel's Global Alternative Propulsion Center in Mainz-Kastel, Germany, and at GM's Fuel Cell Activities facility in Honeoye Falls, New York, USA. Dr Gasteiger has published 45 publications in refereed journals and co-chaired the 2000 Gordon Research Conference on Fuel Cells.

A fuel cell technology bible

If you're interested in the fuel cells, I suggest you to start with this book (though it's very expensive!). It will provide you the necessary knowledge on the fuel cell technology under every detailed issue or topic you can think of. This "state of the art" book also includes very good literature reviews and outlooks, which save you a heck of time looking for scattered papers!

The necessary tool for the fuel cell researcher and engineer

This book collection is a necessary tool for the interested researcher, scientist or engineer in the field of fuel cells. I would strongly recommend this book as it provides in just one title most of the information required for a fundamental understanding of this type of energy-conversion devices. This book is not for the novice reader, though: in several instances, the high level of detail and completeness requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental physical and chemical processes involed. This book was released in 2003: this means that, as of 2008, research has significantly progressed reaching much higher levels of understanding and system performance. However, this title remains a fundamental sourcebook to understand clearly the basics of this important field of research and technology, and will be set up-to-date with two more forthcoming titles of the same authors in the same collection.
