Well-written and Informative

This is one of the best treatments I have read on the martingale theory of the analysis of survival data. This material really gets you under-the-hood of proportional hazards modeling and details when the theory is applicable and where things can break down in the models. This is positively a "must-own" for advanced researchers working with survival data and a "good-to-have" desk reference for anyone dealing with survival data.

Chapter 0 provides a meaningful introduction, and the authors use real-world survival data sets to set the stage for the basic concepts. They like the PBC liver study data set a lot and use it frequently through the text. There is some great material in this short chapter, including a formal definition of the hazard function, a nice overview of the Kaplan-Meier estimator, and an introduction of the Cox model with a very nice, intuitive treatment of the derivation of Cox's partial likelihood function. The authors also set the stage for the martingale theoretic treatment and give three motivating (and compelling) reasons for the theory.

Chapter 1 covers the basics from stochastic analysis that are required for the remainder of the book. Basic definitions and concepts like filtration, conditional expectation, the definition of a martingale and the Doob-Meyer decomposition are covered. No prior knowledge of stochastic analysis is assumed. However, a good understanding of measure theory is very helpful (something along the lines of the first four chapters for Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis). The chapter wraps up with the martingale transformation theorem.

The main aim of Chapter 2 is to establish quadratic variation properties for continuous compensators of counting processes. This material is heavily used in the asymptotic Brownian motion material in Chapter 5 (where a large part of the story rests on the limiting behavior of quadratic variation). To get there, a number of localization results are established. The Optional Sampling Theorem is stated and used (the proof is referenced out to the literature). The main workhorse, the Optional Stopping Theorem is established as a nice application of optional sampling.

Chapter 3 is a wonderful, rigorous treatment of the survival estimators and test statistics that we know and love and always wondered why these are vaguely true. The main result is the consistency of the Kaplan-Meier estimator, which foreshadows the consistency results for the Cox regression estimator established in Chapter 8.

The proportional hazards model and multiplicative intensity models are the main focus of Chapter 4. The modeling framework is introduced, basic concepts such as uninformative censoring are introduced and the method of partial likelihoods is explored in depth. The chapter just has great little pearls sprinkled throughout, including martingale properties for Breslow's estimator for baseline hazard and a number of modeling building diagnostic techniques. There is also a very nice set of graphs on the martingale residual technique of assessing functional form of continuous covariates.

Chapter 5 is the core of the book and develops the asymptotic limit results, including the martingale central limit theorem for counting processes. The chapter is nearly self-contained, with the occasional reference to one of the classical probability texts like Chung or Billingsley. Proofs that could prove a distraction to the main thread are placed in the appendix.

Chapters 6, 7 and 8 provide very nice applications of the martingale central limit theorem. These include: building confidence bands, establishing large sample properties of test statistics and putting Cox's technique of partial likelihoods on solid footing by establishing by establishing consistency and asymptotic normality. As an important final topic for consideration, asymptotic efficiency of the Cox estimator is explored. It is somewhat disappointing that no formal theorem establishing conditions for asymptotic efficiency is presented.

As a wish list item for the next edition, it would be nice to see a chapter or two introducing multivariate survival analysis (competing risks), and the role of Markov processes. For the definitive work on the topic of multivariate survival analysis, I recommend Andersen, Borgan, Gill and Kieding's Statistical Models Based on Counting Processes (Springer Series in Statistics).

Generally good but quality is patchy. Some errors+omissions.

Most of this book is very good but the some sections contain gross errors and omissions. The short section on crystal impedance bridge oscillators refers to 2 diagrams that have been omitted. There is the occasional typesetting error where a group of words are run together. Also some sections suffer from an apparent lack of proof reading in that occasionally the wrong word is used (even though the spelling is correct!). The component labels in some diagrams do not correspond to those used in the text and in some cases the same label is used for two sparate components. Erroneous conclusions about the SSB phase noise floor of a crystal oscillator where the output signal is extracted by running the crystal current through a common base stage. Leeson's equation for the SSB phase noise floor is incorrectly applied to derive an SSB phase noise floor about 10 dB worse than that obtained in practice. Instead of blindly applying this formula a return to first principles to calculate the common base stage output noise and signal currents at frequencies outside the crystal bandwidth allows the SSB phase noise floor to be easily computed. This method also provides good insight into the important contributors to the SSB phase noise floor and how to minimise them.These shortcomings, whilst annoying, don't greatly detract from the overall utility of this book, provided that the reader has some previous experience in the field.

An excellent reference source for synthesizer design

The book gives a comprehensive picture of synthesizer technology. It not only deals with the underlying theory but also provides numerous practical examples of circuits, many of them implemented by Rohde & Schwarz. The author explains the fundamentals of phase-locked loops, describes the linear model for calculating oscillator phase noise, looks at the design of low-noise oscillators and deals in detail with further PLL components such as crystal oscillators, mixers, phase detectors, loop filters and programmable frequency dividers. The noise characteristics of these components are treated in great detail.
Other chapters are devoted to multiloop synthesizers, direct digital synthesis, the fractional-N technique and high-performance, hybrid synthesizers. With each chapter there is a comprehensive reference list including patents. The book concludes with an in-depth mathematical treatise that includes the complex theory of noise in mixers and oscillators. Thus it covers practically every aspect of synthesizer technology. All in all the book is an excellent reference source for anyone involved in synthesizer design.

Great information, very poorly conveyed

I agree with earlier reviewers that the book is hard to follow and does not have a coherent line of delivery of the material. Nonetheless, the content is excellent, with many valuable insights and information. My impression is that the author has great expertise in the material but was either rushed or careless in the writing of the book.

A good book but...

The teory is excellent, this book explains to you everything about soil mechanics, but the practice (examples and exercises) is not so good and sometimes that's what really matters to you.
I used this book in the university and now that I'm working I still use it frecuently because it explains to you very good things in a very easy way.
Another problem of this book is that it might be a little too advance for undergraduate student if it's the first time you ever see soil mechanics, but in general terms it's a good book.

A Classic Work in Soil Mechanics

I'm sitting here with my second printing, tabbed and worn copy of Lambe and Whitman that I purchased in 1971 for $16.00. (I have other copies at home.) I've used it as a student, a professor and a working engineer. Every geotechnical engineer should have a copy of it on the desk. It is a primary reference. I consider it to be one of the greatest books in soils ever written, and a wonderful (though dated) graduate level Advanced Soil Mechanics text (though I haven't taught the class in many years). I have also used it as an Intro text but see it as having far more limited value at that level.

It is structured into three parts, Dry Soil, Soil in Hydrostatic Conditions, and Soil in Transient Flow Conditions. Each section is fine independently, but to learn about a topic in depth requires searching in three locations, with the additional requirement of needing to know something about the chapters around the one you are investigating. While you can expect (or require) a dedicated graduate student to use it this way, a student new to soils does not have the depth to use it safely (i.e., it is too easy to miss critical information that is located in a different section.) (On the other hand, I would have loved to have heard Lambe teach out of the book.)

There are a limited number of examples presented where a beginner needs more. The level of technical presentation is appropriate for all levels of engineers from juniors up. It has both theoretical and in-the-field presentations. There are a few errors which may have been corrected in subsequent printings.

Shortcomings though it may have, my respect and appreciation for the book (especially for its place in time) would give it an easy six stars out of five. The ease in which it can be misunderstood by the beginner (as I was when I bought it to supplement my required text) reduces that to four stars overall.

I've been an Engineering Geologist and Geotechnical Engineer for 45 years. In that time I have used all sorts of Geotechnical texts, and this is by far the best. It is very comprehensive, and well illustrated, with a full range of technical detail for the practice of Geotechnical Engineering at an advanced level. I used it in my Advanced Soil Mechanics class at MIT (Dr. Charles Ladd), and it is packed with useful information. To this day I routinely refer to it for technical insight. If I were limited to a single reference for my practice, this would be it. Sadly, my copy (1st ed. 1969) is beginning to disintegrate. I only wish someone would have done a gentle update and a fresh printing.

A former editor with the Wall Street Journal and author of a biography of Malcolm Forbes, Winans traces the rise of investor Tisch from his first investment in hotels in 1946 (at the age of 23) through the failed merger of CBS and QVC in 1994. He portrays Tisch, whose cooperation on this book he enjoyed, as an extraordinary businessman whose main objectives in doing deals were to protect the rights of shareholders and to generate as much cash as possible for himself and his fellow shareholders. Tisch's investment strategy was to identify undervalued assets and then gain a controlling position in the company to improve its profits, a process that often involved asset sales and staff layoffs. While his business style won Tisch admirers on Wall Street, it attracted little public notice until he took control of CBS in 1986. Winans devotes about half his book to Tisch's restructuring efforts at CBS, and while this is a relatively familiar tale, Winans approaches it from a different point of view, namely, one sympathetic to Tisch. Indeed, Winans presents Tisch as CBS's savior, who confounded his many critics by leading the company back to the top of the network competition. Depicting Tisch as a businessman with a conscience, Winans gives readers a solid, if overly flattering, account of the career of one of America's most powerful men.

Good book - if you like a history of how great a man was

This book is a pretty good read. I am a big reader of business biographies (Starbucks, Walmart, McDonalds, Blockbuster, John Malone, Diller, etc). What I had hoped for in this book was more insight and background on Larry Tiches other deals. This one focussed mostly on CBS and was not written in any exciting fashion. Having said all that - I did enjoy it but would only give it three stars.

Although the information you get is quite nice, the way it is brought to you is not. Winans is so pro Tisch it becomes silly. Most of the world is bad and Tisch is fighting it. I, for instance, would love to learn more about the, so convenient, burning down of the two money losing and well insured hotels.

An excellent summary of issues facing modern societies

This book presents, in clear and easy to understand language, a nearly complete summary of the problems and issues of technology that face a modern society. Issues ranging from alternative energy sources and traffic theory to the problems of feeding the world's growing population are addressed. This book allows one to approach such modern questions as "Should I have airbags in my car?" or "How dangerous is the nuclear power plant in the next town?" from a knowledgeable standpoint. Many worked examples are included. Reference lists and problems are included at the end of each chapter. Although written as a textbook, this is an excellent (and entertaining) resource for the general interested reader. (Disclaimer: I am a former student of one of authors, but never took the class for which this book was written.)

Best in class

This is one of those books that you wish was used in every engineering class around the world instead of just Colorado. It does indeed present complex factors in energy and engineering in a way thats readily understandable. Take today's energy conundrum in which Jack and Bob show that heat engines ( anything that uses heat to make energy ) to create 1000 megawatts of energy you need a 2000 megawatt boiler which in turn will create 3000 megawatts of waste heat. A true gem for anyone wanting to comprehend the bigger picture of energy in today's world and any aspiring engineer or curiosity seeker, that wants to find out why

A solid natural products text

Medicinal Natural Products: A Biosynthetic Approach is an excellent text for the subject of natural products. There are a number of other text available but many (especially the older text) are really biochemical text disguised as natural products text (such as focusing on fatty acid biosynthesis rather than polyketide synthesis). In addition, many text are too short (I possess a text that describes biosynthetic reactions in 29 pages, a far too brief discussion of this complex field). This book is available in softcover at reasonable cost (a very desirable characteristic for students). I particularly enjoy the historical and pharmacological discussions of famous natural products. It is a good text for 1st year graduate students.

A MUST for anybody interested in natural products chemistry!

This text is absolutely superb and the only regret I have is that I did not write it myself! I have used it almost exclusively for the natural products chemistry component of our Bachelor of Pharmacy degree course and it comprehensively covers all of the major types of bioactive natural products. Anyone interested in Pharmacognosy will find the book an invaluable reference text. This book will be of great importance for future students of natural products chemistry. I thoroughly recommend its purchase!

This is really a wonderful book. The author has a deep insight in world of biosynthesis and medicinal natural products. I have read it all and am using it as a text to my undergaduate pharmacy students. It is just what i was looking for. Thanks Dr. Dewick, i am looking forward to see your second edition soon of this book, maybe this time we will have more about biosynthesis techniques!

A fast and easy way to learn medical terminology

Whether you want to understand what your doctor just told you, or you're considering a career in medicine, I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn medical terminology. Quick Medical Terminology will teach you to break down medical terms into parts so you can pronounce, spell, and define them. No previous knowledge of the medical profession is necessary. The format is simple. New words are listed at the beginning of each unit. Word definitions are short and easy to understand. Good examples are given for each term. There are blanks to complete throughout the text, two tests at the end of each unit, and final self tests at the end of the book. Answers for each question and the tests are also provided, so you can check your work. A great way to learn over 500 medical terms at your own pace!

A decent intoductory book on basic medical terminology

This is a decent introductory book (for lay people) on basic medical terminology. Such things are helpful if you do any significant amount of reading on the medical or health professions, or if you're in regular contact with (or employment of) medical professionals in a hospital or doctor's office ... or even if you just want to learn the lingo and become a more educated and medically saavy consumer. Not a particularly deep book, mind you, but it does cover some of the essentials.

However, I should point out that I read this book 10+ years ago, and the informational landscape has changed a lot since then. Nowadays, it's actually cheaper, faster, and yeilds better results, to simply google the terms and conditions of interest directly on the internet, rather than buying a reading a book like this.

Quick Medical Terminology Review

We used this book during my nursing school 12 years ago. I loaned it out & never got it back. Happened to run onto it on Amazon & am thrilled to have it back. It is a very helpful book & along the way you forget & need to refresh!!
