Habib Davanloo is the founder and pioneer of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, which is taught and practised at institutes of psychotherapy worldwide. His scientific and systematic research of the past few decades, combined with a number of discoveries, has led to the development of his comprehensive new psychology of the unconscious mind based on neurobiological pathways of human emotions and major revision of the metapsychology of the unconscious.

Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy offers theoretical, metapsychological and technical knowledge which can be used with extraordinary precision to gain access to the psychopathological dynamic forces responsbile for the patient's symptoms and character disturbances. Many years of research and clinical experience with this method, using video technology as a research tool, has shown that even a single interview produces major mobilization of the unconscious and a unique opportunity for both therapist and patient to have a direct view of the pathogenic organization of the unconscious responsible for the patient's disturbances.

When I received the book I was surprised to find that it as a compilation of articles that I already owned. Having said that, these articles are some of the most important articles that were ever written on the practice of psychotherapy. Potent and satisfying.

This might be one of the best psychotherapy books I've come across, especially on the topic of resistance and I wonder why this was the first review of it. The only reason I could think of is that the book is quite expensive, which according to Jon Frederickson of the ISTDP Institute is because it never was reprinted, and consequently not too many copies still exist.

If you are interested in learning more about ISTDP or just therapeutic resistance this books is top notch! I think that if you could just understand and be able to use a fraction of what is taught in this book you probably get a whole lot out of it.

The cases are excellent, and the authors comments along the way are very satisfying and I have learned a lot from it.

Beware of Weird-Looking Pages (Publisher Mistake)

This is more of a review of the publisher than on the content of the book, which is very good. However, the publisher really screwed up on every page of the book. Every page has a slanted top which looks really strange when reading. I just noticed it, and it's been more than a month from receiving the book, so I cannot return it. It's a shame because the content of the book is great, but I the way the book looks is really annoying.

Excellent coverage of a difficult topic

... this book is incredible. I have a degree in mathematics and the principles expressed are extremely sound -- but far more important than the formulas are the first couple of chapters which cause you to view trading in a very different, and statistical, manner. Although the theories in this book can really only be applied to a trading system (which I haven't really used), after reading this book over several times I understand that there is a mathematical certainty that I will eventually lose my trading capital if I don't start approaching trading in a more systematic fashion. Anyway, I highly recommend it -- the sections on gambling theory alone are worth buying it.

I found this book to be amazingly good. Equities traders should be forwarned that "Optimal f" is employed here for commodities traders that can make use of big margin, but Vince may have addressed this issue in his more recent books.

It seems a quite a few people get angry or perplexed by optimal f, and the reasons boil down to a handful: Objection: Employing Optimal f will introduce you to levels of risk (large drawdowns) you find disagreeable. Response: That's OK, the mathematical reasoning is not invalidated by the extent to which one is risk averse. If you don't like using the largest historical loss to calculate Optimal f, you can use far larger datasets to produce more radical outliers, or even estimate catastrophic (percentage) losses.

Objection: The whole scheme seems a little too radical. Response: This is the very thing that makes the book so refreshing. Vince has done his own thinking, and he has done quite a bit of thinking very carefully. I wish I had him on my team.

Objection: The book contains too much math. Response: yes, this is mathematical stuff we are dealing with. You can trade more simply, but some of us want ideas for a better edge.

Objection: The book contains primitive math. Response: this is a product of the author's kindly tone. He is not attempting to astound you with his knowledge, but advancing new ideas in plain language, and try to keep the stragglers up with the main pack as they read. I found the tone conciliatory and courteous.

Throughout, Vince does his own thinking, and the burden of the book is not what you usually find. Most trading books I have read contain a little useful material, but seems to have been launched mainly to gain the author fame and income. This book is different. Vince has real ideas, thinks way beyond the "safe zone" and the book has completely reshaped my understanding of money management.

Beware applying optimal f to actual trading

The problem with optimal f is that the calculation is highly dependent on the largest loss on a trade (not drawdown) experienced in backtesting. If you use optimal f and the largest loss in actual trading is greater than the loss experienced in backtesting, you will go bankrupt. Vince deals with this problem in an offhanded manner by suggesting that the actual f you use should be "padded". OK, so in the end you don't even use the actual optimal f, you pad it. And how much do I pad it by? Vince is silent on this question. So the purpose of optimal f - to decide by formula how much capital to allocate to a trade - is totally negated by the fact that you must "pad" optimal f. And you must pad it by a qualitativly determined amount because, again, Vince gives no formula on how much to pad it by. Optimal f is totally useless for system traders or any other trader for that matter.

Weiter! Grammatik is an excellent intermediate german book. It is loaded with vocabulary and grammer. Everything is well written and thoroughly explained. There are ample exercises over the material. If you are teaching yourself, it is relatively easy to check the examples by looking back in the section, although it would be easier if answers were given. For easy reference, there are verb conjugation charts in the back. If you did not begin german with this course, you may need an additional german/english dictionary for words that are not included in the glossery. Overall, I think this is a very complete german book and well worth the cost.

Oldie but a Goodie

Sadly, Numerical methods are no longer taught to new generation of IT people. I often find myself having to teach this in the work place. This book is a classic using FORTRAN IV as the programming language. How this book may help you is that you can convert the code to the newer languages and you can see how to take advance math and convert the equations into computer code. If you don't need to do that then this book is not for you. However, if you are reading a book like "Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning" by Christopher Bishop. Then this book will be very helpful for you.

Thompson treats the details of sampling theory best

In the last 5 years or so, as a practioner, I have examined and used, or tried to use, 5 or 6 current texts on modern Sampling theory and practice. Steve Thompson's has been the most consistently useful. He offers more than the conventional wisdom, more than the standard technique. He describes alternative and special methods. when they are best used and how, complete with pros and cons. His generally clear explanations go beyond the usual mathematical formalism to the practical aspects.
For applied folks such as myself, this is really critical. You do not need to be a professional mathematician to make good use of this volume.
In particular, I have made good use of the Thompson's approach to double sampling technique in my own work sampling from the Net, a field loaded with methodological pitfalls.
If you are seriously concerned with generating valid samples in practical applications, Thompson will become a trusted friend.

Truely a text on Automatic Process Control

Note the word 'truely'. Just the section on Installed Flow Characteristics on control valves is enough to worth buying this book. The writers solved the mystery on why an inherent "Equal Percentage" control valve behaves "Linear" when installed; and why an inherent "Linear" control valve behaves "Quick Opening" when installed in most chemical processes being controlled (should factors such as the over-sized factor, the fraction of the dynamic pressure taken by the control valve, and the rangeability of the control valve are overlooked). The writters did it by vigorously deriving the Installed Characteristics from the universal definition of "Cv" (first introduced by Masoneillan in industry, now adopted by ISA), fluid mechanics, and simple algebra, from which the installed gain at various percent-opening of most control valves is derivable analytically by math. Excellent job done. I have used this book since mid 1980's in my career as an Instrument Engineer and recently I used it in writing engineering specifications for control valves. For 15 years before mid 1980's, a book like this has been in my search list. While control theory can be easily found in many texts, unique relevant work experience of writters cannot. Whether you are a Chemical Engineer or not, if your work is related to Automatic Process Control, I will recommend you to buy this book. Before it gets sold out, I am going to buy the lattest edition tomorrow since I believe this book will be useful for at least the next 50 years from now in any process control industry.

A former student of Dr. Smith

When it comes to automatic controls, Dr. Smith is incredibly knowledgable. Unfortunately, this does not always come through in this book. The book suffers from lack of sufficient worked examples to assist the reader in gaining competency in this area. At times, the theory takes leaps that leave the reader wondering how they did that. As with most engineering texts, once the reader fills in the missing steps the concepts become clear and logical. Overall, this is a worthwhile text from which the subject can be learned.

An excellent book on high frequency design. Covers basic theory and applications to microstrip techniques. Many worked out examples. Chapters on transmission lines, couplers, filters, amplifiers, oscillators,and antennas.
The best book on microstrip on the market.

About the Author
MYRON KAYTON, PhD, is President of Kayton Engineering Company, with forty years of experience designing avionic, navigation, communication, and process systems. He has served as TRW's Chief Engineer for Spacelab avionics, Head of System Engineering for Space Shuttle avionics, and Project Engineer for the electronics of the Inertial Upper Stage. During the Apollo project, he was Deputy Manager for Lunar Module Guidance and Control at NASA's Johnson Space Center and is a former section head at Litton's Guidance and Control Division, where he designed some of the earliest multisensor navigation systems. Dr. Kayton is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and an elected member of the corporate board of directors. An instrument-rated pilot, he also holds an FAA Project Raincheck certificate in air traffic control. WALTER R. FRIED, MS, is a navigation systems consultant who is widely known in the field of navigation. In his long career in aerospace electronics, he has worked on most types of navigation systems, as well as on air traffic management, airborne radar, antennas, and communication systems. He was instrumental in developing a new FM-CW Doppler navigation radar for helicopters that is still in widespread use. Mr. Fried was Chief Scientist for Subsystems of the F-111 Avionics System and Technical Director of the JTIDS Relative Navigation System. He served on the FAA-commissioned Blue-Ribbon RTCA Task Force on the "Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Transition and Implementation Strategy" and on several other GPS-related RTCA Committees. A Fellow of the IEEE, he is a coauthor of the book Airborne Radar.

A collection of disjoint writings

This book was obviously intended for the experienced navigator or system designer. It certainly reviews all of the traditional and modern navigation systems. However, in trying to explain every minute detail, the basic workings of the technology are never explained.
The average reader will have a very difficult time in just trying to understand how a GPS or VOR or DME system works. A search on the web will present much better explanations.
This is, by far, not a quick read, it is burdened by volumes of mathematics that are of little practical use, and the chapters, written by different authors, are often disjoint.
Simple, key explanations are mentioned (if at all) after pages of technical confusion. It is as if the author could spend several pages explaining to the average desert nomad how to build a snowman in every minute detail -- how to grow the carrot for the nose, how to pick out the best black rocks for the eyes, how to make the body round to "n" degrees of precision -- but he forgets to mention (until page 89) that, oh by the way, you need to have cold weather and snow to make one.

The definitive text on the subject, for engineers and pilots

Engineers and pilots alike will appreciate this book if they skim the math and read it as a survey text, as all possible functional behavior is described for GPS, GLONASS, Inertial systems, VOR, DME, ILS, and more. The intro to the math involved is good, as it walks the line between satisfying a mathematician's love of state space and spherical trig, while not losing the average reader. As an Avionics Systems Engineer tasked with avionics integration, I found the right level of detail when the book describes electronic hardware, software requirements, and system error sources. As a "cover-to-cover" exercise, the reader is advised that this book asks for a high level of commitment. Read a chapter or two at a time (with trash novels in between), the reader's curiosity will sustain him /her for the duration of this well written book.

Excellent book with exhaustive detail

This book contians all the information that anyone could ever need. It also has the best index I have ever seen, making finding the smallest section easy. It does not really cover the basics of each system, but provided you have a basic knowledge then it will build on that. It is up to the reader to decide how much depth they want to go into, this book will take them as far as they could possibly need to go.
