About the Author
JOHN C. STOWELL is Professor of Chemistry at the University of New Orleans, a recipient of the UNO Alumni Association's Excellence in Teaching Award, and a member of the American Chemical Society. His previous books include Intermediate Organic Chemistry and Carbanions in Organic Synthesis. Dr. Stowell received his PhD in organic chemistry from MIT.

Good transistion from basic organic into more advanced topics

Although this book is pretty dated (1993) it is still a good intermediate organic chemistry book. It gives a quick overview of a bunch of reactions that you may not have covered in a first year organic chemistry course, but doesn't give the mechanism, which isn't a big problem; however it does give yields as well as reaction conditions. The practice problems at the end of the book are fun to do, although it doesn't provide answers but it does give the papers they were referenced from. The book is acts as a good primer into physical organic chemistry, covered in about 3 chapters. The final chapter is about 30 pages on the interpretation of NMR signals, I chose to omit this chapter, so I can't say much about it.
Overall, its an OK book, good deal if you can get it for under 10 bucks.
